I know this thread is four years old now but last fall (2020) I was doing a favorite 3/4 day hike. I was on my 2nd day and stopped for lunch underneath some tall pines by a lake. I was thoroughly enjoying the solitude and sounds of nature and all the sudden I was jarred to "reality" by a horrible hum of a drone. I couldn't see it but I could clearly hear the pitch of the sound change as it stopped and/or changed altitude. If it had continued longer I might have been inclined to try and track down it's owner for a conversation.

That this is even a question is incredibly sad to me, and undoubtedly the shape of things to come... Do not fear, for hope is here !

I’ve recently seen some amazing drone video of blue and other whales off Newport Beach: so I’ll admit to their utility. But for a somewhat different angled selfie with a camera of miles lesser quality than my handhelds alongside the power needs making anything more than a short day hike impractical? Audible impact on others aside (and it’s an issue even when their use is legal, which it’s not many places I backpack) I just can’t see the results being worthwhile. At any sort of altitude the hiker is unrecognizable and walking and controlling the thing is an accident waiting to happen. “ Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drones) Prohibited in Yosemite National Park” www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/use-of-unmanned-aircraft-systems-drones-prohibited-in-yosemite-national-park.htm

I have no issues with drone per say as they can provide great photo footage but I guess I get a little grumpy when I'm purposely trying to disconnect from society for a few days and it comes and finds me.

One night about a week ago, I stepped out on my back porch to let the doggies out. I always look at the sky to see what stars are out and what the weather is doing. Something caught my eye through the trees, two 'somethings' with bright red and white flashing lights zooming quickly at low altitude. They stopped and hovered a bit, then went strait up really fast. It was then I saw three more drifting in different areas around town. I figured they were drones, but the thing that really disturbed me is they were absolutely silent. No sound whatsoever. Creepy even. Brightly lit, but completely silent. My wife and I tried to shoot videos of them, and they eventually flew off to the west toward a military base outside of town no one is supposed to know about. I figured they were just practicing. So now I wonder - how may times I've been watched either at home or in the field by one of these silent drones???

Yeah, I suppose one silver lining are the military recon models are orders of magnitude quieter than any recon helicopter. They’re (recon helicopter) used for searches in the Sierra and lord they are ear shatteringly loud. Probably more so for whatever power needs that thinner high elevation thin air requires. Swapping out for quiet IR sensor drones offers a lot less intrusion out there. A plus in my book.
I’ve had entire days along the Sierra crest broken up by active searches where I had the misfortune it seems to be under the entry, exit flight path to the search grid. Full sympathy for the missing, but my poor ears.
At least when it’s a fighter jet low altitude training run cresting a pass at nap of the earth heights it’s over very quickly, choppers ARE SLOW…. And when the fighter pops the pass inverted, it’s quite a show.

Posted at Beech Bottom trailhead in Cohutta wilderness--- We have loud motorcycles (harley custom pipes) on every scenic highway in the Appalachian mountains, we have near constant overhead jet noise pollution from airports in Atlanta, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Charlotte etc---and now idiots what to fly their personal drones overhead like they're in some Jetson wetdream fantasy. Can't people just dump their toys and walk?
