FOREVER now I've been wanting to backpack on the Havasupai Trail. However I'll admit, that while I've done plenty of weekend camping trips and day hikes, I'm pretty much an amateur when it comes to backpacking. My one experience with backpacking was an 8-day trip to Mt. Whitney, but I was involved in none of the planning of it. SO NOW, I want to begin planning a backpacking trip, but it's hard to find where to begin. If anyone has any information that could be helpful to me, please share, whether it pertains to backpacking in general or specifically to this trail. All information is welcome. Even if it seems obvious, still mention it!
PLEASE AND THANKS!

It's not a difficult backpack if you go in the cooler months. The steep part is just a couple miles long, and the rest of it is a gradual slope on the canyon floor. Since it's a horse/mule trail, even the steep part is not especially steep. Most people can hike it in 4-5 hours or even less. The campground has a water source. Loose dogs and horses from the village roam it at night. Apart from carrying your stuff in and out, it's pretty similar to a weekend camping trip. For permits and other info: www.havasupai-nsn.gov/

I hiked it a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I actually have a tattoo of a photo I took of Havasu Falls. This was the first "backpacking" trip I ever made. I did it solo and it was easy, besides for the pack that it was in late August and very hot and my pack was heavier than it should have been. You could even pack light and stay at the lodge in Supai if you make reservations. Otherwise I'd recommend packing light for added enjoyment.

If you bring a lot of money, you have a safe bailout because you can pay to have a burro take your pack or you can even pay to ride in the helicopter that leaves about every hour.
I'm not saying you should plan to bailout, just that you're not stuck if it's more difficult than you expected.
