I'm 53, and usually day hike all over the midwest, by myself, while on business. I am going to do a buddies route, in early Oct., that starts in Denver, winds down to Pueblo, to Gunnison, to Salt Lake, to Coos Bay, to Tacoma. then straight across to Williston ND. Then down to Cheyenne and back to Denver. It will take at least 8 days. The boss says I can take a day for myself. I would love to stop at Glacier NP, but worry about weather. Or Crater Lake in Ore. My question would be, where would be that bucket list day hike, for that time of year, in that part of the country?? By day hike, I'm saying 5 to 12 miles, depending.

How are you getting from Gunnison to SLC ? That's not too far from Moab, on a driving route. Oct. is prime time to hit Arches NP for a couple 2-3 hikes.

Actually, I have to visit our stores in Grand Junction and then to Salina. So that would be a good idea. I'll have to check out the park! Thanks

Glacier has been negatively affected by fires this summer so it may not be as nice right now though I'm sure there are many places within the park you won't notice that. Most day hikes aren't going to get too high so I wouldn't think you'd have any major snow to contend with though it can of course snow a foot at high altitude any time of year in the northern mountains. I personally would postpone Crater Lake until you could do the boat trip, too. Being inside the caldera on the water is a whole different perspective. You can also schedule one that stops at Wizard Island. Arches is neat and the hikes are short. Some other possibilities that aren't too far off the route (though I'd assume your original plan is to take SR 140) would be Lassen Volcanic NP (it has a small geothermal area like Yellowstone and you could hike the Peak) or Redwood National and State Parks a bit north of Eureka. However, if you're in a semi, the drive cutting across CA could be fun with all the grades and curves. I have trip reports of all those mentioned if you want to get a feel for each area. Scroll down to 2-3 years ago.

Depending on the day, you could get ahold of me here in Gunnison. Is Gunnison for business, or for visiting a friend?

I'd suggest the Skyrim trail in extreme northwest Yellowstone Park. Long but great day hill Up a steep ridgeline, along the ridge and then down. I can be a perfect loop. Might be little onger than 15 miles though
As for Glacier, it could be great or it could be miserable. It's a real crap shoot, but when it's great, it's really great. If the weather cooperates, I highly recommend the DawsonPass trail on the east side of the park. About 18 miles. Another great hike in your range in Galcier is Grinnell Galcier or the Highline trail. Both tremendous. Weather and fires permitting. of course.

On the Gunnison to Salt Lake stretch. Colorado National Monument - you will drive by Or with a slight detour That's not too far from Moab, on a driving route. Oct. is prime time to hit Arches NP One day? Biggest bang for the buck? mmmmmm..... Devil's GardenPopular for a reason. A solid day hike. Here's how to beat the tourons, start early, sunrise. Best light, best views, best solitude. There are features one after the other. Easy to find, won't disrupt your business trip and probability of good weather is high.
Plan B: If weather is good on game day.
Mount Princeton
Bombproof walk-up 14er. Beautiful, well-used, can't miss trail. Potential for a dusting of early season snow higher up, which will add a dash of character to the outing. Awesome views, can't miss it. Trailhead on paved road, might be 10-15 miles out of your way from US Route 50. A fine bucket list summit in the land of 14er's.
All the best!
