Does anyone have any suggestions for hikes in the Lake George N.Y. area? Are there any tall peaks in the general area that are easy? I have never been to Lake George, and am going for the history. There will be a few days that I can use to hike. Climbing one of the tall peaks in the Adirondacks ( the eastern Adirondacks) intrigues me.

Tongue Mountain Range, Crane Mountain (near Garnet Lake), Pharoah Mtn (near Paradox/Schroon Lake). I haven't hiked the Tongue Range, but it gets good reviews.
Black Mtn has a fire tower on top... not sure if the tower can be accessed
Nearest Adirondack High Peaks would be Macomb (Elk Lake Trailhead, maybe 8 miles RT, ~2000' climbing) or Giant (Rte 73 trailhead before Keene Valley, 6 miles RT, 3000' climbing)

If you go to the Tongue Mountain start at the trailhead mid-way, rather than the one closer to Deer Leap (not really worth it) off of 9n. Head towards 5th Mountain for great views and stay high. The trail along the lake is knee deep in mud with multiple water crossings at this point. Black Mt. tower is a radio repeater for the ADK SAR teams powered by a wind turbine. It's very noisy!. The view from Sleeping Beauty is worth the hike- 1000 gain , 5 mile RT. You go in from Hogtown Road parking area outside of Fort Anne. Giant is a good hike, I'd start or finish bn the Roaring Brook Falls trail, which IS living up to its name right now. Trails are muddy, be forewarned. I'd also recommend Noonmark, a little further down 73 from the Northway. Pharoah Mountain has great views of the majority of the high peaks, though not one itself. 8 mile RT that's very worth it. Once again, expect lots of mud and water on the trail. Enjoy your stay in LG.
