I have the chance for a free ride to and from Connecticut. I was thinking about renting a car and visiting Acadia. What is the chance of getting a car camping site on short notice? Oh yeah, it would be the week of the Fourth of July.

I'm thinking maybe something like that of a snowball in hell. But you can try. Call some of the private campgrounds just outside the park. We stayed in one a few years ago (when all the sites in the park were full), and it was actually rather nice, with showers, a tent site on a bluff above the ocean, and almost no blackflies, unlike the park CG.

Thanks, kinda what I expected. It's got to be a busy place during a busy week. If I do go, I might still do a 3 or 4 day windshield tour.

You might try a little farther north at Cobscook Bay. Phenomenal coastline and some great hiking nearby at Quoddy Head and Campobello Island. Some amazing water to watch with some reversing falls and whirlpools with the Fundy tides. There's still sites available and a daytrip drive to Acadia is very doable.

Do it! It will be busy, but I'm sure you can get a site if you time things right.
National Park campgrounds keep a certain number of sites available for "walk up" guests. Each day the sites become available at a certain time. Typically, it's at noon, sharp. You just need to be there right at that time. and you can choose your site. Typically, I park my car and stand at the campground booth, so I'm the first one in line. Make sure to be at the entry to the campground, not the park.
I've done exactly this at Acadia in the part and stayed at Blackwoods.

Thanks Vino. That's exactly the kind of information that I am looking for. Unfortunately, my ride fell through, so I won't be visiting. Thanks again though.

Get thee to Dolly Sods, Cranberry Glades, or Otter Creek.
Sorry it fell through man.
