I am going to be in WA july 4th weekend, looking to do a 2 day, 1 night trip in either Olympic or Mt. rainier. looking for suggestions as I am not very familiar with either. im in good shape, I can do 10-15 miles a day. I was just in Zion a few weeks ago and did 17 one day (40 total in 3 days). looking for solitutde (I know this might be tough with it being a holiday weekend) and a good spot for some photography and night sky shots.
thanks
Dan

The coast? forkswa.com/first-beach-webcam/In spots it may seem like a highway but in other spots, solitude. The sea lions coming to the beach to check you out. Whale spouts. The sound of arr, arr arr, from the sealions. The pounding of the surf that deafens the rest of the world, the near quiet lapping of the water at a different locationn. If you decide on the beach option, either the North beaches or the South Beaches get the permit for the entire length, instead of limiting your options you will be allowed to camp where you may. bpbasecamp.freeforums.net/post/7740/thread

Most of the trails are under snow - though these reports are rather old. www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/trails-and-backcountry-camp-conditions.htmEven the Eastside trail has snow fairly early on: 'The trail is mostly snow free from Grove of the Patriarchs to the Ohanapecosh River Bridge. There are 7 trees across the trail. Navigation and winter travel skills required at snow line (Stafford Falls). Waterfalls are beautiful.' Deer Creek Camp is snow free. Of course that is 6/5/17 so you might be able to go further. It climbs steadily after that though. No views until probably the pass. The wonderland trail on the south side might be open, might be crowded though, and not that scenic. I heard all the permits have been issued, but there may be walk up permits, or permits for short section not sure I haven't followed it that closely.

If Rainier south side of Wonderland Trail is snow free, then from Longmire clockwise on the trail is beautiful for a day out and back. Check ahead if trail still has snow - it is relatively low altitude.

Going EAST from Longmire keeps you close to the road (bummer) until you get to Nickle Creek. I suggest for those doing the complete Wonderland that they should NOT do that section as their last day out... or drop it all together.
For purists that want to credit having done all of the Wonderland, that they do that almost two day section first.

I agree with that, as I said it isn't that scenic, in my first post.
Still no updates on conditions, I know Cougar rock was largely snow free awhile ago, when we camped there. These webcams still show a fair amount of snow at Paradise (5400') , so trails might be steep , and the route might not be clear , esp. if no foot prints (going the right directions). www.nps.gov/mora/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm#CP_JUMP_696850Paradise Valley Rd is suppose to open tomorrow (plowed though) EDIT This shows quite a bit of snow at higher elevations: tinyurl.com/SnowMap123 I haven't checked Olympics but it tends to have lower snow levels.
