Thought it was already back to normal. I'm always in favor of aboriginal names.

Another for "I thought it already had been renamed". It's been so long since I've heard "McKinley", at least 35 yrs +, and with the NPS name for the Park already "Denali" I thought it was a done deal years ago.

Neither. Since it's close to Russia, we should give it a socialist name: America-Russia Friendship Mountain Mt. Palin

I can think of a few more mountains and peaks, and towns, that need renaming — like ones named after "Indian-Fighter" generals with a terrible record of cheating and killing innocent Natives. Or names like "Devil's Tower" that are practically a sacrilege to Native beliefs. There are official naming-commissions that are currently studying the re-naming of several geologic formations in my area — "Devil's Tower" being merely one of them. Yes to Denali. I would love to see Bear Lodge be the official name of Devil's Tower. DT just has to be horribly offensive to tribes for such an important location.

Ah, yes. Okay, then. Someone tell the boys at Interior to change the frickin' database for the geographical feature @ 63.0693461, -151.0060501.
Come on, my friends: the only reasonable moniker for this baby is planetary geographical feature @ 63.0693461, -151.0060501.
"But, no...do we have to change all the map names too? How's it gonna look to have 'Mount Denali' located in the 'Mount McKinley A-3' quad? Huh? Chit!"

I'm a little disappointed no one has voted against the change, there's still time though.

I was merely commenting on "Mount Palin" as a complete sentence. I would rather be a eunuch.

I know that the naming of the tribes here where I live usually came from the other tribes. If you asked any tribe here who they were the basically answered, we are "the people" but if you asked about their neighbors you got names like "the up river tribe," the more descriptive names are the ones used today.

True--and those names were not always flattering!

True--and those names were not always flattering! Yep. "Adirondack" means "bark eater".

"Ohio has been clinging [...], to some bizarre conception of interstate respect. But laying claim to another state’s landform seems more than a little presumptuous — as if Massachusetts demanded that Lake Tahoe be named after Calvin Coolidge." Well, you know, they don't have much in the way of mountains in Ohio.....

Well, you know, they don't have much in the way of mountains in Ohio..... I'm not so sure about that. The folks in the Hocking Hills area of southern Ohio sure consider them mountains.
