I hate everything about this kind of hunting but I don't want to see someone die in a situation like this. Terrible for this person's family. While I agree with what you've said, I have a hard time finding sympathy for people to hunt just for the sake of killing. It impresses me not that you can kill animal even a huge elephant with a gun. As a matter of fact the animal doesn't stand a chance. If you want to impress me take down a elephant or a grizzly with a 6in blade then come brag about it and I might listen. I've heard both sides to the story. I have a friend who travels for similar hunts. He says that no hunter worth his salt wants to hunt an animal to extinction but rather these "parks" raise tons of money that actually gets put back into conservation programs that help make sure animals aren't hunted to the point where there is a problem. However, with that said I still don't understand the mentality who enjoys killing for the sake of killing.

And yet it seems like they could also raise money by doing photo safaris. It would be more of an accomplishment to get a good photo

I've never understood how someone can get pleasure out of killing a beautiful animal. These are the types of guys who go through life trying to impress everyone and prove something to themselves about what a man they are. In my opinion it takes a real coward to kill an animal just for the sake of killing it. I hit a bird today while I was driving and it really bothered me so this kind of "hunting" is inconceivable to me.

The reality is that photographers aren't willing to pay for that picture. Hunters will. Even in the US, the money from hunting and fishing licenses supports a lot of state conservation efforts. That being said, I don't think hunting big cats with dogs is particularly good sportsmanship.

The reality is that photographers aren't willing to pay for that picture. Hunters will. You are probably right. Photogs will pay for a catered trip, but won't pay extra thousands for a "shot" at an elephant. I have to wonder about those who will pay big to kill something rare and amazing. I also suspect that there's the usual knee-jerk "can't be done" reaction to changing up from hunting to other ways of capitalizing on the scenery and animals. Some places are doing it.

That being said, I don't think hunting big cats with dogs is particularly good sportsmanship. Reminds me of going deer or boar or black bear or some other 4 legged animal when I was younger, in the South. For a deer, the dogs are let out whiles Jim Bob and I sit on the hood of a truck drinking Jack and our shot guns, rifled slugs, leaning against the windshield between us. When the dog started sounding like they are headed back towards the truck, we'd stagger to the ground, Jim Bob would face one direction and I'd face the other, when the deer was chased across the road one of us would shoot. After we bagged the deer, we'd drive to the bar to do more drinking and brag about the deer we shot. Good times those were. And I am serious about hunting like that.

@idahowalker, That's the way I used to hunt as well except: 1. Most of the time, I was the dog. 2. No alcohol was involved. 3. Shooting from the road was illegal.

We'd pick up a bunch of apples and throw them on the ground, under a tree in the woods. After a week or so, We'd poke sticks in the apples and hang em from a tree about a foot off the ground. Over time We'd raise the apples till the deer would have to be on their hind legs to get at the apples. By the time we were ready to shoot our deer, the apples would be hung so high in the air that the deer would just be standing there waiting for us to just shoot them. Yuppers hunting was a grand old sport that is quite fair and reasonable for the animals. I grew sickened of the whole hunting scene by the time I was 20, I never picked it up again.

Seems to me the idiot that shot the elephant was responsible for the mans death. The dead elephant fell on the man.
I'm sure the family will miss the substantial income generated by the man. Sad.

I feel for the family, many a man has been lost in Africa to the beasts. Chaps my hide to know that many so called beasts were taken from the shores of Africa, their ancestry stripped away, and were used to toil the burden of a new land and here ‘we’ mourn the loss of this lone hunter. Pffffft. I mean what kind of sport is that? A person gets close enough to an elephant, shoots the elephant and the elephant falls over and kills another person, who jsut happens to be standing around close by. Pfffffft. Heck, just go to the zoo, save yourself a few bucks and shoot one in a cage.
