So it turns out Elkhorn Slough has a LOT of Sea Otters (100+), and they like to hang out both in the water and on land (of all things) in front of some strategically placed webcams... www.elkhornslough.org/ottercam/There's nine in the frame at the moment.....

Plus two with cubs. Funny every once in a while a mom just rolls over and dunks the cub: sort of "rinse: repeat"....

It's fun to watch. Kind of funny, too.

I'd read one time that they used to routinely be seen on the coast before they were hunted so maybe that behavior is their more normal tendency. Sure is strange to see compared to out in the Pacific just wrapping up in kelp for the night.

I was curious to see if the sea otter is the only otter that routinely floats on it's back. I recall seeing them cracking shells for food in that position. Evidently the river otters farther inland are of a different genus than the sea otters. Otter taxonomy. Sadly, they are not animals I've had much opportunity to observe.

"routinely floats on it's back.", yesterday one was bopping along on it's back at real good speed and T-boned straight into another one that was just floating and ran them both out of the frame.... Apparently they need little helmets with rear view mirrors like you can get at bike shops.
The cracking shells thing is interesting, they carry their rock stashed in an arm pouch and not only use it on the surface but also as a pounding tool while diving for food. I guess once you've developed dexterity tool manipulation isn't that far a stretch.

I decided a long time ago that in my next life, I'd like to come back as a sea otter or a golden retriever. They just seem to be happy all the time.
