echo, those are stunningly beautiful views of sunsets. GaliWalker, no wonder your photos are so beautiful and balanced; you show that same insight in your hand drawn art work, plus a good sense of proportion and use of lines. Last time I tried to draw a picture like that, it appeared as if the waterfall was climbing straight up to the sky. Proportion and distancing was always hard for me in art work.

autumnmist , I could nearly always draw, and was able to work out perspective for myself pretty early on (definitely before I was 10yrs old). I got my first proper camera on my 15th birthday; by that time I was already doing detailed, old-school pen-and-ink sketches. After a few years I realized that I wasn't really that good at sketching, and switched to photography full time. The latter was definitely much less work, or at least in those early days! The funny thing was that I mostly did portrait sketches, while my photography style was landscapes. I think the sketch above was probably my very first landscape sketch ever. Also, I learnt compositional rules for landscapes from photography. Last time I tried to draw a picture like that, it appeared as if the waterfall was climbing straight up to the sky. lol

I’m a bit in Autumnmist’s camp with the drawing issues—perspective seems simple in theory, and I know the theory—but like certain aspects of chemistry, I just don’t get it on a useful level. I like the sketch, as well as the photos

rebeccad, On the subject of drawing, I learned a lot from a cancer support group at the infusion center where my sister got chemo. The hospital supported a small area where patients and their families could get together for art, colored pencil, and other classes, w/ supplies being the only cost. The room as well as a sitting area on the first floor were positioned so that sun flowed in during the daylight hours, providing a nice physical as well as emotional warmth. Geese and ducks wandered around the exterior, easily seen in top to floor windows overlooking a pond. The volunteers who "taught" gave nominal instructions, but enough for me to learn that I had a lot MORE to learn. That's when I also learned about the Colored Pencil Society, which I planned to join but never got around to it. Actually though, the best art work I did was portrait work, when I was emotionally strung out, when I was a court reporter. Some of the cases were so horrendous I couldn't unwind, and drew until the wee hours in the morning until I could be normal again.

perspective seems simple in theory, The problem is that when we attempt to sketch something while looking at it, even though the far side looks smaller than the near side, our brain, which knows the actual dimensions, insists on guiding our hand accordingly. You need to override that too-smart-for-its-own-good brain!

From a couple of hours back: On a whim two weeks ago I bought a bird feeder. Late in the season, I know. But these are the exact birds I'm getting on my feeder. Chickadee, titmouse, white breasted nuthatch.

The only new one is the “Dark-eyed junco”, which I’ve started to see in winter. It’s a cute puff ball of a bird but I haven’t got a nice photo yet.
