I camped at Kettle Moraine South this weekend (when did they put a dog kennel right next to Ottawa Lake campground? I heard dogs barking for 2 hours straight and drove around looking for the offending campsite when I realized it was the boarding facility next door...ugh)
Anyways, forgot how much I love hiking the Nordic Trails there - hilly, rocky, unlike anything we have in the Chicago area to train for hiking trips.
What other Wisconsin spots have good trails like this within 3-ish hours of Chicago? I think I'll head to Wildcat Mountain for a weekend trip if I can find a good map of the Kickapoo Reserve trails. Where else should I go this summer for car camping/day-hiking trips?
(Last summer in the Midwest....woohoo!!!)

Wyalusing in southwest Wisconsin is a bit more than 3 hours but worth it IMO. Pikes Peak across the river in Iowa is also worth a visit, and Yellow River State Forest isn't far away.

Have you been to Governor Dodge SP? No, I haven't, maybe I will head that way this summer. Is it hilly?

Another place I have heard of, but haven't actually made a trip yet. Sounds like I need to plan a 4-day weekend in Western Wisconsin and hit Wildcat Mtn, Kickapoo and Wyalusing

hiking the Nordic Trails there - hilly, rocky Sounds fun. May be near Lake Geneva in December. If so, I'll have to take a day and check this out. Though I may need skis instead of boots that time of year.

Last summer Firedancer? The old Griz will miss You! Using Firebugs site I cannot get in Hey Grizz! Yep, I'm finally fleeing the midwest for drier, hillier pastures. Or Deserts. I'm not even sure yet - I'll know when I see it!

I grew up in Wisconsin. 3 state parks come to mind for nice hiking trails in the southern half of Wisconsin (not counting the Kettle Moraine) One has been mentioned already, and that is Wylusing State Park The second one is Devils Lake State Park near Baraboo The third one (my favorite) is Penninsula State Park. That one is in Door County in the "thumb" of Wisconsin.

Well, if you have done the Southern Kettle, the next logical place is the Northern Kettle. I just hiked at Point Beach last weekend and that would be good
