Hey all, thinking of going up to San Gabriels to practice ice axe self-arrest tomorrow and wondering if anyone had any recommendations? I have a little experience, but feel rusty, so want to practice a bit before an upcoming Telescope Peak trip, and possibly Shasta this summer.
Perfect place in my mind would be the Baldy ski trails, but not sure if they'll be in use. Any ideas on other areas that may be good places to practice without huge drop offs? For alternatives thinking Ski Hut Trail, and maybe Cucamonga, but been awhile since I've done the latter and can't recall what that area is like. Also wondering about Baden-Powell.

Just missed your post. Ski Hut and above is popular and you might find somebody there who will give you some pointers. Start early. The trail once you leave the road's switchback at the falls was well marked about 400 yards up the road and on the left.
I think you have missed the high point there by a week or more though.
Let us know if you are taking a look.

Thanks speacock . Ended up doing exactly what you suggested on Sunday. Certainly missed the heavy snow, but there was still a good amount on the way up through the bowl in the forested area above the ski hut, and then lots up by the summit, which was actually the perfect place to practice. Glad I got to pay tribute to Sam as well.

@jdlap I'm guessing there was not nearly enough snow left to climb the bowl?

greenwoodsuncharted not nearly enough, no. Just a couple patches left. A lot more snow still around Cucamonga and Ontario, but seems like whatever's left is going to disappear fast.

jdlp Thanks for the update! We climbed the bowl a couple of weeks ago, and Cucamonga last week. We could see the bowl from Cucamonga and it looked pretty dry. Cucamonga was great though, the last mile was strait up the snow on the ridge to the summit.
