I posted this in Trail head register as well, but wanted to double up here for the locals. For any of you who make it to Mt. Baldy regularly, you have likely run into "Sam" Kim on the trail. At 78, Sam has climbed Baldy over 800 times. My wife and I were fortunate to meet him on the mountain in January. He stopped us, took our pictures, told us who he was, and that he intended to make it to Baldy summit 1,000 this year. He laughed and smiled, and it seems like that is the only way anyone can ever remember having seen him. Stories about him giving out Doritos and jelly beans, and taking selfies with everyone he met abound. Sam died on the Mountain. His body was discovered Tuesday afternoon, after several days of searching. This post is to let those who met him remember, and introduce his beautiful spirit to those who didn't. Sam Kim Video

Thanks for sharing greenwoodsuncharted . I never met Sam, but I'll certainly think of him next time I hike Baldy. And hopefully without sounding morbid, I too hope when I get that age I can't think of a better way to go than while hiking on a mountain I love.

jdlp not morbid at all. That is certainly what I choose to believe that Sam would have said.

I met Sam several times. A fellow everybody could easily get to like and admire. He took hiking Baldy the same as us tripping down to the corner store. Trying to follow him down from the top was an adventure and a challenge. We had a nice hamburger and bottomless pit of french fries in town.
He will be missed by many, I am sure.
Just a reminder that it is a dangerous place even for those with Baldy Wisdom.

Well said speacock. You are spot on about the dangers of the mountains, and also with an example of the beautiful memories they provide us with.
