I used to travel a lot - almost every week. It was in the days when you could upgrade if you asked and they had space. I wanted, for years, to be able to deadpan a response to the celebrity sitting next to me, if gave me the opening, "Who do you work for? What did you say you do?"
I had the chance finally, while sitting next to Don Rickle's publicist. I had no idea who he was other than just another luckless passenger on another flight. After awhile we started up a conversation on the structure of: "Business or pleasure?" "Going home/work?" "Ohhhh, what kind of work do you do?"
"I work for Don Rickles as his publicist." After a pause. "Really? Who is Don Rickles?" Which resulted in a short stare of disbelief. He says, "You don't know who Rickles is?" "Nope", I replied blandly - taking a rehearsed bored sip from my drink.
He turned around with his knees in the seat bottom and with animation (pointing at me) and a chuckle or two explained -- I guessed -- what just happened.
I got two heavy kicks to the back of my seat, and the voice everybody would recognize, "You dip stick! Wadaya mean you never heard of Don Rickles."
This was followed with an impromptu short skit like only Rickles could do - in the aisles in first class.
I ended up 'buying' him a drink. To which I got a ribbing for going through all this just to impress him with a 'free' drink in first class. It was a spectacular comeback.

I never liked his brand of humor. Rickle's sarcasm could easily come off as mean-spirited, and in all fairness, some of it probably was. In the late 70's he starred in a TV series, CPO Sharkey, where he pulled a lot from his experience in the Navy. There was another character in the show that was about 2' taller than he was. IMHO this was some of his best, and funniest work.
