At the end of April, I will be in Portland for a few days and would like to hit a trail while I am here.
Here is what I am looking for:
Something I could do in 4-6 hours or 8-12 miles (a little shorter is okay, but would like at least 4-5)
Would prefer no pavement/gravel and not in an urban setting.
I am willing to travel an hour away from Portland. (a little more if its really cool)
Elevation changes are not an issue; I like a challenge, but don't don't mind an easy trail.
Thanks!

Silver falls state park has a wonderful trail with 10 falls along its 7.2 miles. It is in a state park, so there will be some improvements to sections of this trail link
Other than that, late April will be a bit too early for a trip up to Mt Hood and the trails there, but the Columbia Gorge will be in full bloom, both flowers and falls. There is a nice loop, but only 5.7 miles, up Multnomah Falls and across to Wahkeena Falls. Great hike, even in a misty rain. 1500' elevation gain/ loss

Columbia Gorge is great though very crowded, go early, closer than Silver Falls. I think Eagle Creek is closed. Many other trails, but tops might still have snow.

I second Zeke's suggestions. The Multnomah Falls loop is the quintessential Columbia Gorge hike, and late April will be perfect. But if it's a Saturday or Sunday, I'd pick Silver Falls SP or another destination, because the area around Multnomah Falls will be mobbed.
There are also some trails on the Washington side of the gorge that tend to be a lot less crowded. I don't remember exact details OTTOHM, but if you're interested I could look it up when I get home tonight.

Here is a good place to check conditions: www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=8The last I checked the old highway was closed on the west end, but you can park at the rest area on the freeway for Multnomah Falls, or come in from the east end on the old highway, and then reverse it on your way out. ==== That link shows some guys walked into Lost Lake I didn't know they plowed it, too bad would be a nice ski, great old growth, view of Mt Hood over the Lake. I think that would be 1.5 mile drive, plus you have to hike 3 miles on the plowed rd. ====== EDIT I don't see a closure for the old hwy anymore, so maybe it has reopenned. While looking at this I noticed there is a link for parking at the Multnomah Falls at the rest area on Hwy I 84, both a webcam & a % full was 90% now 100% full, and the map shows congestion at Bridle Vail (so that confirms at least that part is open to either the Falls or Crown pt? or both?) Not sure if this link will be zoomed in or if you will have to do that (cookies?) tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.aspEdit Confirms it is now open: www.kptv.com/story/35017370/historic-columbia-river-hwy-reopens-after-two-week-closure-due-to-landslides

Glad you enjoyed it. I took several relatives through there when I lived nearby.
