I'm shopping for a Canadian Maple leaf patch for my overseas travel pack. I live in the U.S., and may do the same thing... I can understand why, in these times.

When patches are sewn on backpacks is the stiching seam sealed? Never done it to my pack. My Navy cruise jacket has iron on patches as does my astronomy jacket. Seemed to work ok. I would be leary about ironing or stiching to a pack for just the reason of leakage.

"Patches? We don't need no stinking patches." Never have. Probably never will.

Some do, some don't. I have no opinion. . . . . What's a patch?

Patches are sooo old school. Tats convey the same message and weigh nothing. Check out the photo of Lint's legs on this webpage. I met Lint at a hiker hostel in NH several years ago. He was finishing up his third thru-hike of the AT. He had already thru-hiked the PCT and CDT three times. He had a map of each of those three trails tattooed on his legs.

I have two patches on my backpack. Both have been drilled out and most of the stitching removed to save weight.
Kidding...Seriously, I have two patches on my pack. I will probably get a tattoo of my Firncover trip as well.

I have an old pack that has duct tape patches on it. Does that count? Have to admit that was what I thought when I saw the thread title! I don't have any actual patches, but I've stitched up a couple of little holes. I like Reuben's idea of putting them on my travel duffle, though in fact I don't have many. In fact, at the moment the only one I can think of is from a Century ride 2 years ago, where they gave them to anyone who did the gratuitous loop that put the climbing over the top (8 or 9000'; I can't remember now).

I have a cheap backpack I bought for Machu Picchu...But now it's been to go backpacking in Peru twice (Machu Picchu and Huaraz) and this year to El Chalten in Patagonia. And I have the patches from those places. Sooner or later I'll get them on the pack.
But not on my normal GoLite....
On the other hand, I inherited a few CA state park ranger patches from my dad. They're at least fifty years old. Still looking/thinking about what I could do with them.

Hard to mistake these guys at the airport. For the record, I've actually been to all of those places, ridden the Alaska Railroad, and gotten a free flight from the Chilean Air Force when there was some trouble a few years ago.

Wife has for years. Right now she has 70 on her hooded sweatshirt. She wears it on day hikes if the temp is appropriate. All are from places we have visited/hiked except for one for her college. Wish all the places we go to/hike had them abvailable.
