I stepped on the scale this morning and realized I had gained 4 pounds. Since yesterday morning. Ugh.

It started snowing lightly as I left my jobsite in Binghamton (NY) yesterday afternoon. Good thing I left when I did... they got 39" last night!

Yawning “Good Morning”
The rain that we got the last two days has filled the puddles and robins, blackbirds and crows are fighting over worms and baths this morning. It was loud enough I couldn’t stay asleep but now it’s enjoyable.
I have done almost nothing yet, but that’s nice too. Instead of having her school to deal with, her Dad is here with his day off and so I’m just birdwatching and browsing my tablet.

I stepped on the scale this morning and realized I had gained 4 pounds. Since yesterday morning. My scale does that too. I've decided it's miscalibrated and tired of serving its purpose of providing good news whenever I step on it. Maybe your scale is ready to retire too. How much snow have you gotten in your area? I was thinking that I'll bet you'll still be running, or maybe just slushing through if you've gotten as much as some of the other hard hit areas. If you haven't, apparently there's still another potential 20" to fall in the NE areas. We only got about an inch, but it made the roads slick just as darkness fell and the 5pm traffic became heavy. I'd rather have several inches of snow than ice, especially since a lot of folks just won't slow down. echo , so yesterday and today will be the battle of the birds? I've never seen anything like that here. I think they've negotiated a noncompetitive pact. Little flocks stay awhile, then fly off, and a few single birds wander over, before another flock of a different species arrives and the singles leave, perhaps to wait in their high tree perches until it's time for a shift change again. Perhaps they were trained by their parents at some of the auto plants that used to be prolific in this area.

Good morning! It rained most of the night, and my rain gauge now has 2” (collected since the rains started last week, but most of an inch much have fallen last night). So excited to have some moisture here at last.

rebeccad, does the fragrance of rain linger long enough to be refreshing? Just wondering b/c of the higher temp, and the fires. Summer rains here often dissipate so quickly if they occur on one of the hotter days. Fall and Spring rains are the best, I think.

We got around 6". I forced myself to run last night, and it was every bit as miserable as I was expecting. The snow made conditions slippery, but the wind was worse (windchill in the single digits). Driving into work today, I got caught behind some bozo in a low-riding sport/luxury car that must have had bald summer tires. 15 mph the whole way. I wish police would ticket such people for driving a car unfit for conditions.

It’s a transient thing, the sign of rain on dry ground. I love that smell, especially during summer storms out in the desert.

walkswithblackflies, I think some people just don't understand how to safely deal with changing seasons and weather. Or maybe they think they're invulnerable. Our daily temps are in the high 20's, yet I've seen a couple young guys in bermuda shorts. If they ever get stranded, they're going to wish they had used common sense. OTOH, my first car was an MGA Roadster, with sidescreens, not windows. My father warned me repeatedly that it wasn't appropriate for Michigan winter driving, yet I really, really wanted a cool sports car. That changed after the first winter snow, when the snowflakes came through the gap in the sidescreen (1/2"), and the heater wasn't strong enough to compensate for all that cool air, but it did help melt the snowflakes ... on me.

A few Xmas's ago, I went out to shovel the driveway after opening our presents. I was out there in my typical shorts and sweatshirt. About halfway through I realized I was... cold. Weird. After I was done, I went inside and happened to look at the thermometer. It was -10F. LOL! That explained it! *During the winter, I keep a set of warm clothes in the car.

I shoveled snow this morning, probably 25°. Just call me wimp city, wore my Feathered Friends 8,000 meter Jacket. It makes me look like the Michelin Man in red!

I don’t have to shovel snow, but anything that vigorous at 25 degrees would have me sweating like a pig in a down jacket. I’d probably be in shirt sleeves, though not shorts—my feet get cold, so keeping my legs covered is important.

Cold feet: I finally found a good solution: men's hunting socks; they're so thick I don't think my feet would even know they're outside. During the winter, I keep a set of warm clothes in the car. You might want to take a flag or something to mark your place if this happens to you (hopefully it won't happen to anyone else; this poor fella must have been so cold): www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/new-york-man-freed-from-car-after-a-snow-plow-buried-him-under-4-feet-of-snow/ar-BB1c2Oes?ocid=msedgntpA 58 year old man was trapped in his car for 10 hours after a snowplow covered it in 14 feet of snow. He couldn't heat the car b/c of a broken belt, but I would think even if the belt hadn't broken he couldn't heat b/c from the photo, the exhaust pipe(s) would have been completely blocked with snow.

autumnmist, do you have over-sized boots to wear with those super-thick socks? The only time around here I really have a problem with cold feet is when biking, and it’s hard to do thick socks in those shoes.

rebeccad, yes, I wear oversized boots. After realizing that my feet were getting colder over the years, I started wearing 2 pairs of socks until I switched to hunting socks. Now, I just have to hope that old age doesn't cause feet to enlarge any more than they have.
