For anyone wondering, I made it home. The air isn’t breathable here, but today it’s about the same as Seattle. And never before have I driven the entire way from Seattle to CA without actually seeing any scenery. Through Oregon yesterday the visibility was about 1/2 mile. It’s better here, but probably not much over a mile.

rebeccad, do you have to sequester inside the house, or use a respirator if you have to go out? It's unsettling and frightening thinking of people trying to live through this. Be safe.

When the air quality is in the worst categories, the best is just to stay indoors with the AC running. When I had to go out (because I really really needed a walk), I wore a mask, for whatever good it does (I don’t have the kind of respirator mask that is meant for smoke, but I figure I can reduce the particulate matter). Unless there’s a miracle overnight, I’ll have to drive to the grocery store tomorrow.

Through Oregon yesterday the visibility was about 1/2 mile. My oldest moved to Portland in March, started her new job and logged in 3 days in the office before the shutdown and work-from-home. She sent a pic yesterday from her apartment and they couldn't see the hills 1/2 mi away. We get on Amtrak Wednesday from St. Paul MN to Portland for a visit -- risking Covid, but doing our best to limit exposure to people, because I miss her so much. We have a roomette on the train and can have our meals brought to our room, and we love to ride the train so it should be all good. We may have to stay inside and play games/watch movies the entire visit, but I don't really care as long as we are together. The air is cooling and winds lessening, so hopefully there will be some relief for those western states. Glad you made it home safely, rebeccad.

mk , I hope you, your daughter and the rest of your family have an enjoyable, safe trip and visit, and that the air is clearer by the time of your arrival.

OR and WA look like maybe getting some relief if the rain materializes. In CA, it doesn’t look so good. It’s getting me down in a hurry, not being able to go out at all, and breathing stale indoor air, not able to open up and cool the house properly, all that. Two workouts a day was both keeping me sane and helping me get ready for the Canyon, and now I am down to improvised weight workouts. COVID makes going to the gym a bad idea, and even the pool is outdoors so that’s a non-starter (though it being outdoors was making it possible to swim before the smoke moved in).
OTOH, the smoke may do what reason couldn’t: get people to mask up and stay home!

I am hoping to have a Good Morning, It will be an act of will.
The smoke is depressing and I’m not sure anymore if anyone has a Covid symptom or just a smoke symptom. Anyway we are up and functioning enough that I got the kid to school. Down the stairs and in the computer room and on zoom. Last week no Monday of course and then school cancelled due to evacuations in a big chunk of the county. Today is some clearer, the haze looks more like fog than smoke.
Yesterday, since outdoors was over 500 on the smoke scale, we stayed indoors and managed to create a lot more space in the living room.

PBS has been running one of its fundraiser events, this time featuring (again, much to my pleasure), the Folk Rewind with a lot of the songs I remember fondly from that period. One of them is California Dreaming, another is Eve of Destruction. The first, with its upbeat verses about California sun, seems so inappropriate and out of place for the current time. Eve of Destruction is more symbolic and in line with current events, at many levels, unfortunately. I usually ask myself if over the years how much change, if any, really has taken place in these areas of negativity.
It's interesting to segue back several decades and remember the good life then, but it's not comforting to think about the negative changes and the unpleasantness they bring.

I went for a hilly bike ride (30 miles, 2,000' elevation gain) on Friday after work. I decided Saturday should be a rest day, so I took my daughter to her horse competition (she got two first-place awards!). She's also starting HS Cross Country soon, and she was due for a "long" run. So instead of a long trail run on Sunday, I took her for a 5-mile trail run at a local state park.
Oh, I also hit a few milestones:
1,000 miles run/hiked (including a bicycling equivalent... bike miles divided by 3). That was my goal for the YEAR. 1,000 miles bicycled >87,000' elevation gain (3x Mt Everest from sea level)

I lubed my bike late last week. I guess it worked!
Brutal headwind on the way up the 1200' climb today. But with the help of the tailwind, I hit 61.3 mph on the way down!!!! 😳 🔥 Then I passed a car on the way down the lower part of the road. 😅

This weekend I:
Split a face cord of wood Harvested and pulled up the last of the corn and cucumbers Trail-ran 5 miles with my daughter at a local County park. I had forgotten how nice that park was. Hiked 3 miles with my son and my friend's family Cut some new trail on a parcel of land recently donated to the local State park. It will be part of a 5 mile loop of the parcel. While tugging on an overhead vine, it broke partway up, and I managed to punch myself in the balls, to the amusement of those around.
