$14K in 6 windows and a sliding glass door. Wow. But if they do their job in hurricane conditions, they'll recoup their cost that way, right? We switched out all our windows (15), autumnmist, a decade or so ago, and followed that project up with new doors. I don't remember how much the doors cost, but the windows were about $11,000. It has dramatically positively impacted our cooling and heating bills. The old windows leaked so much that you could feel the outside air when you were near them. And my favorite feature is that they tip inside so I can clean them by myself without having to run outside and in. It's a miracle!

I’ve been in Seattle, staying with my BiL and SiL, who are hosting Second Son through fall quarter (lemonade from lemons—if you can’t attend school in person, find someplace you want to be and do it from there). I *was* enjoying being out of the CA smoke, but conditions have reversed themselves and now Seattle is smokier than Chico. Sadly, the latest fires deep-sixed our hike, planned for today, at Mt. Rainier. So I’ll head home tomorrow and start getting ready for the next trip

Riding my bike to work today, a bug hit my helmet and fell into a vent hole. I figured it was a beetle. Half a mile later I stopped at an intersection and took my helmet off because I could feel it moving around on the top of my head. It was a bumblebee! Glad I took my helmet off!

I went for a trail run yesterday while my daughter was at horse lessons. I forgot just how hilly the park is. No big/sustained hills, but not many flat sections either. Over 900' of elevation gain in 3.3 miles.

Okay, I may or may not go home tomorrow. Or anytime soon. Fire situation in Oregon is dire, and Chico is under a serious pall from the fire threatening Oroville.

Speaking of the fire situation in Southern Oregon, those best friends we’ve had for 27 years who spent Labor Day weekend camping close to us, went home to Talent, Oregon on Monday. Tuesday night there came the “get out now, don’t stop to grab anything,” call. They fortunately were back because her 91 year old mom lives alone next door. Their belongings (also fortunately) were still In the camper that her Dad had strangely called and bought off Facebook just about 6 weeks ago and then died three or four weeks after that. So they took her mom, their dog and the three of them in the camper to the Jackson county fair grounds, and overnight both houses were gone. like GONE. Sometimes certain people seem to always have the same luck. These are like that, always on the edge of drama, yet eventually it all works out for the people. Unlucky luck? Cursed fortune? Once a burglar broke into their bedroom while all they and their kids were asleep in the big bedroom. He took the Dad at gunpoint and made him hit their teller machine and drove around with him in the trunk for six hours before randomly catching the eye of a police officer in the next state who hadn’t heard about the situation but managed to save our friend. And 22 years later that kidnapper suddenly showed up on my husband’s student roster at the prison. We have no family on this coast but they are that for us.

I'm so fast I ran out of my shoe!!!! You haven't developed wings, have you? BTW, your photos are lovely, especially the last one. rebeccad , for some reason I thought you lived in Southern California, so I googled Chico and found not only that you're much farther north, but that there's an air museum in Chico with a good collection of older planes (including some biplanes, which fascinate me) and some more contemporary planes. Have you ever visited that museum? Be safe on your way home; I assume you'll keep us posted? (I'm am a worrier.) echo , reading about your friend's narrow escape was unsettling, and harrowing, but I'm sure more for them than me reading about it several states away. It seemed events did combine to allow them a quick escape. I think though that I was just as concerned about the mother when I read that she's 91 years old. I'm glad they were able to take her and escape in time. I can't imagine the challenges of living or adapting to that kind of anxiety. How do people handle it, besides being prepared to evacuate on a moment's notice?

Good luck rebeccad I’d offer to meet you around Grants Pass but our road there is still closed. Keep it in mind someday as your passing that way, it’s about 85 miles from me.

Made it to Ashland with no issues. I’m staying at a friend’s house, well away from the fire area, but alas, the air that was pretty clear when I arrived about 5 has filled with smoke as the breeze picked up.
ETA: leaving Seattle might have been a mistake, as despite smoke there, it was better than anywhere south of there.

The bottom bracket of my bike (where the pedal crank turns inside of the lower frame) had been squeaking of late, and kept getting worse. I figured the bearings needed to be replaced, but it requires a special tool, and the bike shops are horribly backlogged right now. I was hoping just to get by until the end of the season (October-ish), but it got to an unbearable level earlier this week. I had already tried oils and lubricants of all kinds, to no avail. So, in a last ditch effort, I saturated the bottom bracket, chain, and deraileurs in WD40. Then, a couple hours later, I did it again and let it sit overnight. IT WORKED!!!! NO MORE SQUEAKING!!! WOO-HOO!!!
