The middle. Avoiding the craziness of either entry or exit at the clasdic termini would be best. For example enter at an Inyo trailhead and the Whitney Zone exit daily quota needs to be applied for. Ick. The easiest public transport entry pointvare the number available out of Mammoth, lots of trailheads with JMT acccrss reachable by car or bus and lots of daily quota. About sixty miles down trail for your friend and a natural resupply point. Join there and head south as far as your schedule permits.
