hanging off the back of the backpack I think it would have to be strapped on the *top* of the pack to work. Towering over your head.

Well maybe.. but I use the top pouch too much for that to work for me. Nice thought though.

Don't overthink it. Nobody takes more than one canister. I haven't heard of bears raiding camps outside of Yosemite in the last several years. Your pack will carry more than you should carry.

Nobody takes more than one canister. And yet I always wonder how they do it. Though maybe with careful planning I could get the food for 2 of us for a week into 2 canisters (one each).

If they aren't carrying 2 canisters, they may be paying for more drops. VVR, JMR, Red's, TM Post Office. South of the Muir Ranch, it gets dicier. I watched one group meet up with friends who brought them a food drop over Kearsarge Pass.

Well... the food weight and size gets less as the trip continues...
If you leave the trailhead in the morning then the first day lunch and dinner does not need to be inside a canister.

At Muir Trail Ranch we had two bear canisters and still had to hang a little excess food.

Undoubtedly, this will bring me consternation here, but... When heading out on an extended fishing adventure Sierra...usual is 10+ days with no re-supply intended along the way. Not surprisingly, (like many here), not all food fits in my bear can initially...even allowing - (as mentioned above) - for the first day when not needed. (BTW, using a 60 size backpack and a Bearikade Weekender can.) In many parts of the Sierra (Yosemite, Ansel Adams, SEKI, Whitney Zone...more areas to come soon too), hanging food in these areas, (pretty hard to hide a hang), will invite a Ranger over for a visit and a $$ ticket as now illegal to hang food any more in these areas. (http://sierrawild.gov/bears/food-storage-map)
You could carry two bear cans...(not going to happen), get a larger can (won't fit in pack), or pick a shorter route (meh). You could just hang the extra food anyway and hope no Ranger...(would actually prefer to do this). My plan recently, for the first few days anyway, where there is no convenient bear box available, is to sleep with some food. I know this is illegal and dangerous but...off trail and isolated...just a dirt-bag rebel.
If you use/have a bear can with you, perhaps you should be able to hang some food too?

I'm going to put that map in a link, for everyone who is interested. It will make it easier.

That link is outdated.
Lassen Volcanic NP now requires canisters. The adjacent Lassen NF does not.

I'll hike with Zeke - sounds like a grand version of a Sherpa (2 cans - one pack WOWY) Wife and I did 9 days walking across Sierra mostly on the High Sierra Trail. All (except first and last) fit into one Expedition Bearikaid. (WildIdeas.net) Just a FYI - took two rolls of TP. Had 5 squares left - plan ahead. Happy to loan it out (and I'm not using it) if you pay postage. Needs to go into a square box. What we packed in there was bulk dry goods, flattened out between tortillas and tamped hard with a water bottle. The weight of the fuel for cooking was just part of the plan. We had plenty of time for meals, including hot lunches. I'm not saying it was all wonderful cuisine, however It is difficult packing that many calories. If I can find my chart of wasted calories -I'll post it. It is a long walk from the ranch to Mt Whitney exit - albeit BEAUTIFUL. The last 30 miles or so you will have visions of all kinds of foods. As mentioned Kearsarge is a convenient resupply route. The manager of the camp at Kearsarge is a crusty old codger and will have nothing to do with holding a resupply package. Generally a good place to hitch a ride up and down the hill though.

markskor JMT goes from Yosemite Valley to Mt Whitney summit. Just a tad south of Lassen. The PCT bisects Lassen. Maybe the one you were thinking of.
