Im looking for any suggestions for a Mid May backpacking trip this year. I know the snowpack is a record levels and will shut out most of the high country later than it has been the last few years. Im looking for just about anywhere in CA,NV or even southern Oregon. Ive done the Lost Coast and the Ventana Wilderness is closed due to the Sobrantes Fire but am looking for options that will possibly not be terribly snowed out by then if we dont get much more snow. Feel Free to spitball on this one Im open to all options and willing to travel.

I can recommend a trail work trip in the Dick Smith Wilderness (Madulce). You could add a hike through the San Rafael Wilderness to it that would be great. lpforest.org/events-calendar/

How long of a trip?
Henry Coe is a possibility. Should still be decent water availability and probably not scorching hot yet. Lots of options for various length trips.

Check on road closures. We've gone up from Sequoia's Wolverton Creek around Memorial Day or before. It is snow, but it is walk-able without breaking through the 'crust'. Normally good weather (again check with the prognosticators). Excellent cross country opportunities on the north and northeast of Alta Peak. Few others up there to keep you awake with all night parties.
Just plan on no trails but you can find tread marks of those ahead of you (and hopefully returned). Trek poles are a good tool to keep you upright. We've done it without crampons or other traction devices other than sturdy boots.
Tremendous camera opportunities.
Might call the rangers and ask what they think of the kind of trip you might be interested in.
Sequoia NP will probably be open along all the normal tourist routes. You can stop almost anywhere (big tree attractions) and take a hike on snow to a place few have ever been.

Ishi Wilderness is low elevation foothills. Wildflowers should be blooming then. Creeks will be high.
