I have done the Rim2Rim last Thanksgiving and Catalina island the year before. Looking for something that’s less than a day drive from Los Angeles where I can do a 3-4 days backpackinging trip?

Thanksgiving is right on the cusp of winter in the Sierra. If you don't mind a little night time chill, US 395 starting from Lone Pine up to Mammoth will give you lots of options for as many days as you can carry food for. I very much like November and Thanksgiving as it is almost the end of the dirt hiking season. If you take any of the trails (sooo many to choose from), make sure you have a very good handle on the weather for the 4 days you will be oot 'n' aboot. An option if you are a bit paranoid about the weather is to take any number of day hikes (Cottonwood Lakes, Kearsarge Lakes, Bishop Pass, North Lake to Piute Pass, etc) and return to a basecamp/motel for the kinds of amenities you would like (bath, bed, meals). Each of those hikes will take you to the first day of a back pack. It takes about 5 hours to get to Lone Pine from LAX. There will still be some good days on any of the long beach trails that line the Pacific but you may have more morning fog. Check out the LOST COAST thread down the list aways. It is on my todo list someday. I've hijacked a link from below: www.climate-zone.com/climate/united-states/california/bishop/

Thanks speacock ,
I think will definitely meet snow in high sierra, I have pair of microspikes, will it be sufficient or I will need crampon or snowshoes.
Thanks

IMHO, microspikes and 'pons are great for icy, consolidated snow... New snow? Snowshoes better but any fresh snow over a foot deep always presents travel problems. Watch the weather forecasts prior and...sometimes wisdom says best to stay home.
