I'm trying to decide between Swift Camp Creek Trail in the RRG Clifty Wilderness Area and the Laurel Highlands Trail in PA. Both are about 5 hours from home in NW OH, which is my preferred distance limit for this trip. Going April 5-7 with my 14 year old daughter and 10 year old son (his first trip). Any suggestions, advice, warnings, etc?

Two very different areas. I'd suggest the southern end of the LHHT ending in Ohiopyle. You'll have some good views and streams, and Ohiopyle is very beautiful with many great trails and waterfalls, not to mention a small town in the middle of the park. Other loops to consider are Minister Creek and Morrison Trail in the Allegheny National Forest. RRG is very beautiful as well. Have fun.

I can't advise about the area, since I'm not from around there But I'll advise you read through some of the threads here on taking the kids. Lots of good advice there. And welcome! We hope to see photos when you get back

Minister Creek and Morrison Trail in the Allegheny National Forest. I'll second this recommendation. It's been a couple of years since I've hiked through that area but it's a wonderful hike.

Swift Camp Creek Trail is nice, but is fairly rugged even though it's not very long. Some nice campsites and pretty conveniently spaced for a leisurely two/three night trip, especially if you explore around some. The Big South Fork is a great area, and much less crowded, but that might be a little far for you all. Another recommendation, that honestly I think would be the absolute best, is the Sheltowee Trace/Rockcastle Narrows East Trail loop that passes by Van Hook Falls and then follows Cane Creek and the Rockcastle River. It is an 11-mile loop near London, KY (so only about 1.5 hours further than the RRG from where you are coming from) that has fewer crowds, some nice waterfalls, and a rugged whitewater river to look at and camp nearby. I think it would be a GREAT first backpacking trip for your son. It was one of my favorite hikes when I lived in Kentucky. Here are some more details about that hike: www.kywilderness.com/forum/index.php?topic=7372.0

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas and advice! I'm a little partial to heading south where it should be a little warmer in early April. But I'll plan on having options "B" and "C"" in case of bad weather. Keep the destination ideas coming!
