Mandalay is a big city in Myanmar, after just Yangon. Before the trip, I have find out and realized Mandalay nothing interesting as Bagan or Inle so I decided only spend one day to explore this city. I will take the night bus to Mandalay and then wander around, until the night will arrive Inle. Very little time, but I still want to visit many places as possible. However, on that day, I got a trouble therefore one day schedule in Mandalay of mine only run and…run!
Backpacking Guide Myanmar
Some basic backpacking tips for those intend put Mandalay into the backpacking trip in Myanmar
How to arrive Mandalay and traffic in this city
Some flights can fly directly to Mandalay by transit in Bangkok and Yangon, however I not like transit at Yangon because those domestic flights in this country always got review so bad!
If you depart from Yangon or other cities to Mandalay, can go by bus. Bus in Myanmar got quality very good. Detail of bus companies and how to move in Myanmar you can see in All about backpacking Myanmar.
There are many ways to move in city. If you go backpacking in group, should hire one taxi the whole day from morning til night. It the cheapest and most convenient way, prices about 60k-70k Kyats for a cab 4-seater. If you in solo travel, you also can hire one motorbike driver the whole day, price about 20.000Kyats, or like as me, hire motorbike, pouring full up petrol and wander all day. Total cost about 11.500kyats in case hire motorbike the whole day.

Eating in Mandalay
As well as other cities in Myanmar, Mandalay also has those traditional foods like traditional meals, Shan noodles, milk tea. You just go to centre zone next to the Mandalay royal palace, or wander around the markets on early morning, you will see a lot of eateries serves breakfast include breads, milk tea…Those dishes so delicious, it’s the familiar images in the life of Myanmar resident. Besides, at Mandalay also there the roasted duck dish of Golden Duck restaurant also very famous.
Hotels, motels
You can choose motels in the centre of city, price about 20$/night and up.
some main sightseeing in Mandalay
Ubein bridge: The longest wooden bridge on the world with length of 1,2km
Inwa village: it about 5km away from Ubein bridge to the south, and want to arrive the village must go by boat. Arrive here, people often hire horse-drawn carriage and go around village, take about 1,5 – 2h.
Mingun village: Highlight of this village is the white pagoda Hsinbyume Paya, next is Pahtodawgyi pagoda under construction unfinished due to the earthquake, the second largest bell in the world Mingun Bell, and Big Lion Statues. In additional, here also has Sagaing Hill.
Mandalay Royal Palace: in middle of central city, that is the huge complex include a lot of small zones as: Royal Palace, Shwenandaw Monastery, Sandamuni Pagoda, Kuthodaw Pagoda, Maha Atulawaiyan Monastery và KyauKTaw Gyi Pagoda.
Mandalay Hill: you should go up to the top of hill to visit Sutaungpyae Paya pagoda, watch the whole city from a high position.
Besides, there many sightseeing places are less exciting than. If you have much times, of course, should explore all. Example some pagodas as Kuthodaw, Mahamuni, Mahagandayon monastery or those craft workshops, precious stone market…

One day in Mandalay
The bus takes me from Bagan ancient town arrive the Mandalay quite early, about 3h30 in the morning. Some backpackers suggest together share taxi into city to save a cost. However, I want to hire motorbike for convenient to moving therefore I thinking about places to go. Hire motorbike at bus station seems not feasible because there not any for rent store, in case motorbike taxi, they only ferry, not for rent.
After talking to some motorbike taxi driver, I decide let they take me into city, then I hire a motorbike from a motel and begin explore Mandalay. Actually, that decision also not good because if you hire one motorbike driver the whole day only 20000 Kyats, it too simple! While I gone by motorbike taxi in two rounds (5.5000 Kyats), and hired motorbike the whole day with cost of petrol (11.5000 Kyats), total cost about 17k Kyats, besides, it took a lot of effort!
Longest wooden bridge of the world
After hire motorbike and deposited the passport, I ride to Ubein bridge to watch the dawn. It’s a long way about 10km and at that time was nearly 5h in the morning. The bridge still quite deserted, the wind was strong and only few locals and some bonzes wake up early.
I ride the motorbike go along Taung Tha Man river where Ubein bridge crossed over. Parking motorbike at bridge bottom, I walk contrary on the bridge. In Myanmar, you can park motorbike at anywhere no need to keep, not to have worry it stolen. I walk along bridge and watch everything on it. The bridge were created from large wooden slats, look so antique but so solidly. People move on the bridge gradually more crowded when the dawn appears.

After shooting few images when the sun still not bright, I walk along the bridge, want to check how long is this bridge? From here, stand and watch those sun rays in the early morning slanting through those floating clouds create those lightening streaks, very great! There few of small boats in the distance, few fishermen are fishing. In the middle of bridge has some resting point. At here, I had enjoy one slice of cold watermelon.
Now, the sun rise high gradually, I come back bridge head. It’s start scattered rain, dark clouds coming up, quite fast. When I approached ground, it becomes big rain pouring down. I run to one eatery nearby, take shelter the rain and seek something to have breakfast.
This is a traditional eatery of Myanmar people with many dishes as noodle, rice, other dishes…I suggest one bowl of noodles mixing and one coffee cup, taking a rest and wait rain stop. Especially, milk tea here is very delicious, it has a characteristic flavor that I am never ever tasted in anywhere. That’s great taste!
I thought that the rain will stop soon, however, it’s keeps persistent from 7h till 12 h noon. I had stayed in the eatery the whole morning, can not go out. Final, I decide must go because I not have much time, whether still raining. I wear the old rain coat bought from a motorbike taxi driver at there with price of 1.000 Kyats, ride back the center in order arrive Mingul village. Fortunately, go a way, the rain stopped and then there a slight sunny…
Mingun – Mandalay Hill
I ride to the pier where there the boats ferrying passengers cross river to arrive Mingul village. However, when I arrive at and got an information said that only one trip from the Myan Gyan Jetty pier arrive Mingun village at 9h morning. The return trip start at 1h in the afternoon. Wow, at that time also near 1h. Some people guide me go by road but must go in the round road so far away, oh! It’s will not be enough time. A little disappointed, I ride towards Mandalay Hill.
Distance of Mandalay Hill and Myan Gyan Jetty pier about 30 minutes ride. On the road has many slopes and tortuous but in general it doesn’t matter to me. I feel here quite like the road leading to Doi Suthep pagoda in Chiang Mai. It’s also go up to the top, you visit the pagoda and watch the whole city from a high position.
Go by horse-drawn carriage in Inwa village
Almost 3h in afternoon when I leave Mandalay Hill. I hurried ride in the direction of Ubein bridge to arrive Inwa village, intend then will come back Ubein bridge to watch the sunset. I go by boat with cost about 1200kyats and take 5 minutes arriving Inwa village. When approach the shore, in front of me is a lot of horse-drawn carriages already wait available to serve tourists. Each carriage only contain about 2 – 3 people, I suggested a few people go by horse-drawn carriage together in order share together cost money (10.000kyats for one trip go around village and 4 sightseeing places), however, no one approved. They all go in separate groups. Fortunately, final also one coachman had accepted ferrying me go alone with price only 5000Kyats.
Horse-drawn carriage is a popular means in Myanmar, especially in some tourist places as Bagan or Mandalay. Go by horse-drawn carriage is also interesting experience that you should try when go backpacking in Myanmar. It’s a gentle feeling, peaceful. It’s also the most reasonable means for you moving in Inwa village because this village absolutely are dirt roads also quite wide. There some sightseeing places require buy tickets (price is quite high) so I only stand and watch at outside.

Sunset in Inle and Golden Duck restaurant
The sky turning red at the horizon after the rain. The scenery became fresh and more cleaner. I am speeding arrive Ubein bridge in order not miss this beautiful moment. On the bridge now had crowed people, mostly backpackers and tourists. There those light streaks in reddish gold on the horizon create a spectacular sight.
Leaving Ubein, the last experience of mine in Mandalay is enjoy duck dish in the famous Golden Duck restaurant. I am very hungry after a long day wander on the roads. This restaurant quite large, located on the avenue opposite Mandalay royal palace. Here quality service so good to the standard of a luxurious restaurant, only drawback is those dishes served must take quite a while because this restaurant very crowded. I had eaten half duck felled into slice and one plate of fried noodles. Although I’m so hungry and dishes so delicious, however I cannot finish all dishes on this table.
Evening, 8h I come back hotel and return motorbike, take motorbike taxi to bus station, on 10h I take the bus arrive Inle.
