I came across these survey results when searching for some information about AT hikers. The sample size was 187 hikers. FWIW, the results are consistent with my impressions.
General hiker stats
Backpacks -- 60L-65L internal frame was the most common size and type; Osprey was the most popular brand.
Footwear -- trail runners preferred but boots not far behind; various brands.
Shelter -- tents were the most common shelter; Big Agnes was the top brand.
Sleeping bags/quilts -- down sleeping bags were the most common; various brands. Of those who used quilts, EE was the most popular brand.
Stoves and water treatment -- canister stoves (MSR and Jetboil dominated); Sawyer Squeeze and Mini.
Sleeping pads -- Thermarest inflatable.
