Shelter? Sleeping bag? Maybe he doesn't intend staying overnight...would say this a day-hiker list, but a light was mentioned. Confused.

I guess I hike in the wrong places. I've never considered sunglasses nor sunscreen an "essential". Even in AZ I didn't need these things but then again I was there in Feb.

From the source(The point of the Ten Essentials list (developed by The Mountaineers, with origins in the climbing course taught by the Club since the 1930s) : www.mountaineersbooks.org/Assets/ClientPages/zz_TenEssentials.aspxYou really have to read the text below the lists, at least if you are in the Mountaineers as they require for instance , for light, extra bulbs and battery (I just carry an extra light). It is oriented to climbers, but I too don't consider sunglasses essential since my eyeglasses also shield against UV and hence sun blindness, of course some say you will get eye fatigue but that is minor problem, in snow I have goggles as back up. Sunscreen is a good idea, not sure it is a survival item, though if you don't have a tan you might get a serious burn?

I have my own list, and the contents vary with the location and season.
Some places you do not need to pack extra water. May or may not need a flashlight. The extra clothing and shelter depends on location and weather. I just look at the situation and determine what I should carry for the unplanned events.
