Is it worth going to either island for just one night? All these years of going to Sleeping Bear, I've never been on either of the Manitou Islands because I always have my dog with me, but I'm heading up that way this weekend by myself. I can only eke out one night - I need to be at Interlochen by 1:30pm on Sunday and the precludes being able to stay Saturday night since the ferry doesn't get back early enough on Sunday. So, I'm thinking of heading up early Friday to catch the 1:40 ferry then catch the same afternoon ferry back on Saturday. I *might* be able to head out Thursday evening and get close enough to catch the morning ferry instead.
So, will it be worth it? Which island? Any recommendations on where to camp? Thanks!

Depends on what you're looking for. SM has designated camping. NM you can camp anywhere but fires are not allowed. I'd suggest NM if it were me.

Just booked passage for North Manitou. It's been 7 seven years since I was there last. Last time I did primarily the south part of the island because all the hikers I ran into from the north end said the mosquitoes up there were of Biblical proportions. But this time I'm gonna wander around the north end anyway. If the bugs are bad I'll stick close to the shore.

Nice! (except for the mosquito part) The time that I'd originally asked about in this thread, the ferry was sold out by the time I tried to book, so I ended up at Nordhouse Dunes for the night. Spent the next day meandering up along the coast, stopping at spots I'd driven by in the past but had caught my interest. Picked a bunch of blueberries, too. It wasn't the trip I'd envisioned but a great "me time" day anyway.
