Can someone enlighten me on how the mummy bag sizes should be interpreted? I was reading the specs on a Kelty bag in a store recently and the regular size claimed to fit a person that is 6' tall but it said the overall length was 78". I'm 6'2" and unless math has changed recently 78" is 6'6". The next size up claims to fit a person up to 6'6" but listed the overall length as 84" which is 7'...What am I missing? Thanks.

Having enough room to wiggle your toes or move your head is required. When you are measured, it assumes your feet are flat on the ground. When people sleep, some like to stretch their toes a bit.

In addition to what tigger said, most people keep clothing in the bag with them, to keep them warm to put on in the morning. Or, a hot water bottle in the foot of the bag to help warm the toes.

The inner length of the sleeping is were your body goes, then there is a filler layer, and then an outside layer. The outside layer, or actual length of the sleeping bag, is longer then the inner layer. This difference is to allow for space for the filler material to loft.

If I were 6' 2" I'd get a long.

those measurements sound weird. echoing the comment above, go with a 'long' if you are over 6 feet tall.

There's no real standard for size, or temperature rating.

I read those measurements off of the tag on the bag as it hung up in a BassPro and thought they we weird. I'd always planned on getting a long but when I saw those measurements I began second guessing. Thank you all for the advice & info! You guys have any recommendations? Trying to stay around $150-$175.

If I were 6' 2" I'd get a long. Agree. Also make sure the footbox, hip and shoulder dims fit your needs. A too tight bags is a no-no.

A too tight bags is a no-no. I'd rather have a bag that's a bit to large than a bit to small.

I'd rather have a bag that's a bit too large than a bit too small. Definitely. A bag that's too short (or too tight) means you can't keep it tight around your shoulders and it's drafty. Or you are always pushing out the sides, which compresses the insulation and leaves you with cold bits.

I ended up going with the long and it's perfect. Found a good deal on a Sierra Designs Zissou 3S. Nice and roomy and I got warm after being in it for just a minute or two while trying it out in my living room.
