So you are starting a long trail- like in February or early March and you are going to be gone for 2- 6 months.
How do YOU handle your tax filing?
I do want to know.

Don't pay them? Or president says only smart people don't pay them. Or something like that.
Seriously though, if you have everything you need, file before you leave. It's possible to file and even have the check back before the end of Feb.

File an extension. That gives a taxpayer until October 15 to file a return. Note, however, the extension only applies to when the return must be filed. You have to estimate your tax liability for the tax year. Any taxes due must still be paid by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties. If you won't owe any taxes or expect a refund (or are willing to pay interest and penalties), just file an extension.

I do want to know. Long trail hiking, Long Trail hiking, or no hiking, it's the same. Gather my info in early January and push the e-file through as soon as the w-2 shows up. Done by early Feb, refund (if there is one) back by late Feb/early March.
