Hi! I am looking for some recommendations for our first backpacking trip as a family. DH and I are experienced but have never taken the kids along. My kids are 9 and 12 and in good physical shape. I am having a hard time identifying a good route for them - I don't want something too tough, but all of the "family" trips I am finding online are extremely short (like 0.25 mile). What we would like is a 2 night trip with a total of 15ish miles, not all super hilly, and not a lot of places where I am going to be worried about the kids falling off of a cliff.
Is there something in the Pemigawasset Wilderness that would work? We also looked at the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, any info on that?
Thanks in advance for any advice or ideas!

Have you thought about just a day hike first to see how they respond?
As for location, I'm in central NY, so I can't help you there.

The Kilkenny Ridge Trail is not a bad idea. You could put together a loop or simply hike in to Unknown Pond (an absolute gem) and hit the wooded summit of Mt. Cabbot and do the easy scramble to the open summit of The Horn on the way back to camp. This might not be as ambitious as you are thinking about, but when you factor in solitude and a real possibility of moose and bear, it's a good option. There is a little more information and a few pics on my SP page for The Horn... www.summitpost.org/the-horn/152089

Thanks for the suggestions! We have already tested them out on day hikes and climbs so we weren't too worried about them being able to do it, but wanted to make sure it wasn't a death march. We did our trip last weekend and it was fantastic. We headed to the southern portion of the Green Mountains and did the Bourn Pond - Stratton Pond loop. It was a tough 3.2 miles in to Douglas Shelter, then the next day was ~5 miles to Stratton Pond and then Sunday we hiked ~8 miles out along the LT/AT. The kids did great and loved it! We are hoping to squeeze one more trip in before winter. It was a great trip too for my husband and I to get back into the swing of things
