As a city girl, I don't have experience with trails but I'm willing to learn. So, if there's anyone interested in directing me and going on a trail or providing advice, please let me know. Thanks!

I'm in Tennessee, but feel free to shout out questions --lots of knowledgeable folks in the forums. we have several Florida folks that are frequent posters. I bet they can rattle off some ideas for places to visit over in the panhandle.
the Ozarks might be your closest mountains, or maybe the southern edge of the Cumberland Plateau in northern Alabama.
do you have an REI in NOLA? some REIs do gear rentals... maybe do a tester backpack trip to see if you're in to it before you spend money on gear. also, a lot of universities do gear rentals.

Head over to UL-Lafayette and ask for Stacey Scarce. She takes some students on overnight backpacking trips, mostly in the Atchafalaya River Basin. She is a ranger with the Basin. I have no clue as to who to ask at UL-L. Might try someone in the Recreation Dept. In this case, the web is your friend.
Or, if you FB, look up Stacey Leah Scarce and send her a Friend request. Tell her I sent you.

Connecting with single strangers on the internet can be hit or largely miss due to different hiking abilities/personalities etc. I would recommend looking into a group meetup like this: www.meetup.com/neworleansoutdoors/or one of Null's trips for a more focused national approach...
