Our original plan was to backpack to the bottom of the Grand Canyon during our kid's fall break the third week in October. But, I was not able to get a permit. So, we're looking for plan b.
I'm looking at the five National Parks in Utah. Do you know of good 1-3 night backpacking trips in any of these parks?
My kids are 9 and 11. They have successfully hiked 5-6 miles and 1,700 feet elevation gain before.
Thanks for any help you can give!

I think the best backpacking trips in Utah are NOT in the National Parks (with the possible exception of Canyonlands), plus, hiking outside the Parks frees you from a lot of the hassle of permits. Look toward the Escalante Canyons area or Cedar Mesa (Grand Gulch/Fish and Owl/Road/Lime, etc.). Fabulous scenery, petroglyphs/pictographs/ruins. LOTS of options! Maybe lower Dark Canyon? Consider purchasing one of the guidebooks to the Grand Staircase/Escalante for some guidance.

I recommend Canyonlands Needles District in the Chesler Park area. Pretty nice 3 day trip. As a bonus, there's some rock scrambling which kids usually like. One note: You are required to pack out human waste.

I would recommend going into Zion National Park from the I-15 entrance on the west side. You can hike down to LaVerkin Creek, set up camp and explore the area including Kolob Arch considered by many as the largest arch in the world. Another option would be to hike the West Rim from Lava Point to Zion Canyon.

A great overnight trip is Buckskin Gulch. Google it. It's the deepest slot canyon in North America. It is near Zion so you could explore the Narrows of Zion then head to the Buckskin on your way to the North rim of the big ditch (Grand Canyon). Not a huge fan of Bryce for backpacking.

I agree with Trail Ready The Needles district in Canyonlands is just fantastic. I was there last October and would go back in a heart beat.
