Hi folks, Plodalong here, the 'other half' of 'Plodalong and Grandma Shortie'. (She is obviously the "better half"). We are New Englander's who live by summer in North central Maine but call Southeastern Mass home...(home is where you pay the most taxes, right?). We are in process of transitioning out of our careers (called retirement) and making ready for a 2018 NOBO AT thruhike. We have sectioned some from Northern VA to ME and now want to see if we can put it all together by making it a 'thru". We have camped/hiked/kayaked for years but still very much consider ourselves as novices. We do some trail work locally. Prefer YouTube hiking videos as our "entertainment of choice'. We love Ramen and a nice slice of Spam cooked over an open fire. And, we call a level tent spot, privy, clear sky, good water source, and perhaps a bearbox to be our version of "5 star accommodations".

Welcome! Pull up a log or stone around the campfire and join in on all the fun.
I live on the Olympic Peninsula along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and spend most of my hiking/backpacking time in the Olympics. I do venture elsewhere though.

Of all the ways to thru hike the AT (before college, between jobs, independently wealthy, retired) I think the being retired is the most rewarding. It'll test your mettle, your relationship and give you lots of time to look back on your lives and decide how to keep the next chapter fun and interesting.
Welcome from the desert southwest.

Hello back. When I introduced myself here, it was as a plodder, as is my wife. I live over on the border of NY/Vt. , within 45 minutes of 6 AT trail heads. If I can ever be of assistance, I will. I spend a lot of time on the Mass. coast. More up in the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, and the Crane's Beach State Reservation. Love the state reservation system and donate every year. Hope you share some of your local trails.

Welcome from south central Texas.
My opinion on "bacon, beer, Scotch, Brussels sprouts, kilts, beets and okra" is: can't ever have too much teetotaller, so only root beer ditto avoid them religiously will not be caught dead wearing one love em will eat em, but not as a first choice

Welcome! As long as you don't mind a lot of absurdity, you've come to the right place for inspiration and advice! kenv Thanks for answering the quiz. We must have missed you. You might want to rethink the kilt opinion, if you want to stay on the good side of the women around here

thanks everyone for the welcome! let's see, the Quiz. Bacon: what's not to love? Beer/Scotch... in my day! But had my number retired in the hall of shame..so its Dr. Pepper and Moxie (I'm a New Englander, remember?). Brussel Sprouts... partly boiled, halved, fried with bacon and onion. Kilts..have one. A formal one, not a hiking one...love it, especially on a breezy day. Beets, yup! (and the greens) with butter and salt...or cold with a touch of vinegar. Kale, nope. not a fan.

You did well on the quiz. I'd say we should teach you the secret handshake.
