Overthinking things: The tree would still be standing if it hadn't been hollowed out.
Overthinking things even more: The tree would have been chopped down long ago to make picnic tables if it hadn't been hollowed out.

The tree would have been chopped down long ago to make picnic tables if it hadn't been hollowed out. Meh. It is in a NP, not likely to be chopped down for furniture. Agreed the car corridor did not help things, but it was an icon for a long time and a right of passage to many. Similar to the firefall and feeding the bears at the dump.

Back in the mid 1960s went through it with my whole family. We went through more than one on that trip.

There area a handful of big trees with a drive through in CA. I've seen two, but never saw this one in Calaveras.

Calaveras Big Trees is a State Park, not National, and the State Parks did the hollowing many years ago. Probably never would have been felled for picnic tables. Old growth Giant Sequoia really produces poor quality lumber. Young growth is OK, old growth is too brittle.

This one was hollowed in the 1800's, and while I would be against doing it now. I kind of think of it along the lines of how I feel about orca in performing shows. It was these fascinating exhibits that caught enough attention to make enough people care and want to preserve them. People often won't spent time, money or energy on something in general, but once they fall in love with a specific one, they will want to save them all.

A century ago there were a few large sequoias hollowed out so in several parks because it was a novelty for tourists to drive jalopies through and of course still is. Two were in Yosemite NP, one fell and the other one can only walk through. There is also a hollowed out road going through the side of a large giant sequoia in Giant Forest at Sequoia NP that one is still allowed to actually drive through. There are also at least 3 coast redwood sequoias also so hollowed out including one that is almost all natural so. Another thing the pioneers did was cut down especially large trees and make dance floors out of the stump tops. Unfortunately some were the largest trees in the each forest.

Our new Secretary of the Interior has promised to tunnel through some new trees so folks won't miss out on the fun, it's called winning. Don't panic I just made that up.
