I'd second the Tablelands suggestion - if you're comfortable navigating off trail - and if you want to avoid crowds. Go up to Pear Lake for the first night, there will be others there, but if you then go up to Moose Lake on Day 2 you'll probably have the place to yourself. Especially if you go during the week.
Have fun!

Rae Lakes vs Deadman Canyon
Debating trip w/ my buddy for last week of August for nice 5 day trip. We're decent backpackers, but not super experienced (ie high passes/snow). I have done some Agnew Meadows area packing, Montana, and High Sierra Loop in Yosemite trips among others. Mineral King seems out for now given scrambling off trail/use routes that my partner will really have hard time w/.
Welcome votes/comments.

Rae Lakes vs Deadman Canyon Both are awesome, but Rae Lakes will be much more crowded especially with PCT/JMT traffic. Elizabeth Pass is a little tougher than Glen's Pass as I recall even though it's lower elevation.

Mineral King seems out for now given scrambling off trail/use routes Most people hiking out of Mineral King don't get off the main trails - not sure why you think you'd need to. I guess my suggested route included Glacier Pass because it's a shortcut, it's fun, and it's more scenic than hiking out Timber Gap. Rae Lakes really draws a crowd, but Sixty Lake Basin is right up the hill. Don't know what route you mean to Deadman Canyon, but it could be a really long approach if you stick to the trails.

Deadman Canyon route is a loop I have read a fair bit about. Start at Lodgepole -> Twin Lakes/Silliman Pass /Ranger Lakes - > Comanche Meadow, Sugarloaf area -> Roaring River Ranger Station -> Deadman Canyon -> Over Elizabeth Pass -> Bearpaw - > Wolvertone a/o Crescent Meadow on the High Sierra Trail and bus it most likely back to Lodgepole to regain my car. Typically about 50 mile loop done in 5 days.

Got denied Rae Lakes, which is fine. Doing Deadman Canyon Loop Lodgepole -> Silliman - > Belle CAnyon/Sugarloaf - > Roaring River -> Elizabeth Pass up from Deadman Canyon -> Bearpaw -> Crescent Meadows or Wolverton area ~52-53 miles over what I hope will be just 5 days. Here is a good writeup of the trip I am following: backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/37691/
