Hi Jenn
1. Where do you live?
2. We need to know your opinions on: Brussels sprouts, kilts, scotch, okra, bacon
3. Head over to the gear forum to find get equipment advice
4. There is not, and will never be a #4.
5. Many of us have been in the same boat weight wise. Backpacking has it's own motivation....you can think "if I can lose 25lbs, it will be like not carrying a pack!

Now that you've met the crazies, may I introduce a Texas loony? I useta live in SoCal and thus hiked in California and other points west, but now live in the Texas hill country, so I do my hiking out here now. The terrain is way different, but the fundamentals remain the same. Let us know if you have any specific questions or would like some suggestions.

I saw an opening and took it. Don't blame me. They could have easily started with "Salutations" or something a bit more flourishing.

It is good to remember that the fundamentals of hiking do not change as you encounter different terrain. Hiking might be one of the most transferable skills sets one can master. The ability to walk a long (say, more than 1 mile) distance without being distracted or stopped by a cell phone, iPad, or other digital device is critical. Not many people can master this skill. They are digitally tethered to the modern world.

Hi Jenn! Backpacking and hiking, I've come to discover, are perpetual learning activities. Trust me, it seems like after every trip I find a better or more efficient way to do things. Keep an open mind and you'll have many amazing experiences and see the most beautiful, untamed places nature has to offer!

I suppose that depends on what you consider the fundamentals of hiking. I know that hiking/BPing in the dessert is way different than hiking in the PNW. Rumi
