Welcome to the Forums, jenn504.
Visit all the forum subjects here and start by reading up on what kind of activity backpacking can be. Feel free to ask anything. Someone will be up to speed on the information you may be looking for.
Basically, backpacking, also called wilderness travel, is carrying everything you need to survive for an overnight stay on a trail after walking for a distance. It's probably the most enjoyable way to accomplish a goal.

I will teach you the ways of the backpacking world. First, some simple rules:
1. Do not look at Tigger's avatar. Ever. 2. The destination is the journey. 3. The journey is the destination 4. Always bring a map to the destination.

Wise advice from Hungry Jack. Yes, at all costs...avoid my avatar. A sense of humor is required to enjoy hiking. Without one, you'll end up crying.

You've found a good place, strange though some of the inhabitants may be.
Welcome to the Pleasure Dome.

If you do look at Tigger's avatar, just rinse your eyes with Listerine. You will feel better.

Let's debunk some of the most common "city folk" misconceptions about backpacking and back country camping.
Given that I live about a mile from Wrigley Field in Chicago, I will start.
You need to carry your water in, or only camp in places that have a spigot. Believe it or not, I have encountered this multiple times. The truth is that all you really need is a good water filter, such as the MSR Mini Works (the Gear thread has a lot of discussion) to filter out pathogens and other nasties.
That said, you still need a water source. I prefer to filter from smaller streams in areas of faster flowing water. When possible, I will fill a gallon jug (I clip one to my pack while hiking, empty of course) and let it sit in the sun for a few hours, where UV rays can help purify water.
Always know before hand where water sources can be found. Mark them on your map if needed. In the Midwest and eastern US, finding water is typically not a big concern, though it can be scarce in higher elevations. In the west/southwest, it is a major concern.

Don't do this: See all the sagging in the side panels? He didn't pack that for diddley squat. He could cut 400L from his pack size if he knew how to put stuff in there. It's a backpack, not a duffel bag. Heckuva waistbelt, though. Could double as a corset.

I tried Le Crevasse once, or some approximation of it, accidentally, while waterskiing. I think it's overrated.
