I was in LL Bean yesterday and saw a set of 2 maps for the New England Trail, which I had never heard of, but apparently runs N-S through Massachusetts and Connecticut.
The maps were not all that great in that they didn't show elevation contours. Furthermore, I could not discern where two nearby trails: The Metacomet - Monadnock trail and the Mid-State (MA) trail might be, or if they were coincident in some areas.
Does anyone have better info on this trail? A map showing all 3 trail would actually be very useful. Thanks, Steve

The current NET is a work in progress and is really part of a longer trail concept, but is only formally established in Connecticut and Massachusetts. It incorporates the Metacomet-Monadnock trail, but runs well west of the Mid_State Trail. I don't know of a good way to link up the Mid-State with the NET (but it has a direct link to the Wapack). I think the map that the AMC sells (which is probably what you saw) is as good as there is available for hard copy purchase: amcstore.outdoors.org/books-maps/new-england-trail-map-and-guideHave you checked out the NET's on line map at newenglandtrail.org/get-on-the-trail/map ? Guthook, who has a useful blog, worked on stringing together a series of trails beginning with the northern terminus of the Cohos Trail at the Canadian border down to New Haven - basically trying to concretize the greater concept of the New England Trail. You might take a look at Guthook's blog if you are curious: www.guthookhikes.com/guthook-hikes-blog/2009-new-england-trail in addition to the NET's site. He has a link there to his daily trail journal at trailjournals.com. If you are looking for a New England Trail less traveled, I suggest looking into the Cohos. I hiked it in 2009, the year Guthook did it as part of his longer hike, and then again this past summer and can assure you that it's in much better condition than it was 7 years ago. PS: How did your Long Trail Hike go?

PS: How did your Long Trail Hike go? I hiked about 40 miles of the Cohos Trail back in around 2000 when it was still a work in progress. My friend and I started around Connecticut Lakes and hiked maybe 40 miles Southbound. It was certainly rugged but we saw only 3 people (at once) the entire hike. The Long Trail was great, but difficult and slow going. We were fortunate to get great weather although the one day of rain was on Jay Peak so no real views. The Belvedere Fire Tower definitely made up for that though. I'll peruse the links you provided and see if I can piece a trip together that includes tenting. It wasn't immediately clear whether it's allowed in Connecticut, and if so where.

Cohos is still a work in progress - but a lot of progress has been made. I also saw very few people in 2009 (after reading my report, my wife suggested that it was because most people had common sense) - there were a lot more in 2016, but nothing compared to the AT or even the LT.
I've not backpacked anywhere along the official NET, so I'll be interested in your reports. Did you post any kind of report or journal on the LT?

Did you post any kind of report or journal on the LT? You know I've never posted a report on this forum. I have posted on Trailjournals in the past but very infrequently. It's probably something I should get in the habit of doing.

Just curious as I'm kind of an LT addict, and seeing your questions made me wonder how it turned out.
I also post to Trailjournals, using this name. I try to get all of my trips of a week or longer posted there, though I've got some catching up to do.
