As usual, my wife and I went to the Grand Canyon before Christmas to visit our son and his family. We enjoyed ourselves even though none of the adults except Lee felt super good. As usual, I went to one of the bookstores just to browse the books. One of the books is about Death at the Grand Canyon. I found Mary Phyl's entry in the book this time. It was short, to the point, and of course, many of us know much more about her death than the book published. Mary was a friendly woman who opened her house to us and our family on more than one occasion. One time, she and her husband hosted a dinner for AZ Hiker, Carol & I, members of her family and it seems like some others that I don't remember know. I sure miss her, and seeing that write-up saddened me for the rest of the evening.
Someone will have to post about our other entry in that book, where the wife of one of our members died of heatstroke. I can't remember the names right now. I've looked it up, and it is in there too.
Keep those you love close.

It's strange that this is my first post on the board. But I used to be a member years ago and I seem to recall we lost a member of the old forum back then too. I really wish I could remember their name but it's been quite some time.Although I do recall that they were no strangers to the trails and region. It truly is a reminder that we do take things for granted these days and while I'm just getting back on the trails.I was shocked at some of the ill equipped folks out there. Stay safe everyone.

Someone will have to post about our other entry in that book, where the wife of one of our members died of heatstroke. That was Zeke's first wife, April. It was a Forum trip, so quite a few people here have vivid memories of it (I wasn't on the trip, and hadn't yet met Zeke at that time, and even so, the shock was powerful. We have lost a lot of folks over the years, to a variety of accidents and far too many to cancer.

Her name was April Goode. There were a total of 6 hikers in the group, all from here. Most of us met for the first time when we gathered at a restaurant the night before that trip. Since then, we have stayed in touch and become good friends. Sharing that experience touched us all, even those forumites who were not on the trip. Somehow, the news spread here before I got back to report it. There were many thoughts & prayers sent our way.

MaryPhyl was one of my favorite people. I hiked with her several times and think of her often. I still miss her!
April's death was a horrific experience for those who were there and shattering to many of us who were not. Rallying together to support zeke and the others was important to us.

I remember the post that Zeke put up about her death which was the first I knew about it. That was a tough thing to read.

Did they publish the names of everyone, or just those who died?

I'd bet it only includes the deceased, but possibly some other notes about the size of the hiking party. Only names they would have without getting access to the debriefing reports.
