For y'all on low carb diets... what do you eat for meals while backpacking?
It's sad. I haven't been backpacking since being on my low-ish carb diet.

walkswithblackflies I am on a low carb diet to control my T2 Diabetes, but when I am on a backpack trip I eat whatever I want, allowing the higher than normal calorie consumption to be burned off by my higher than normal workout. So, on any 5-6 day trip I might eat 100 more grams of carb per day than usual, but burn off so many calories that I return weighing less than what I did before leaving for the trip. Normally, I restrict myself to about 200g of carb per day and that seems to keep my labs in check, at my current exercise routine. When I can no longer do that, I may need to reduce my carbs again.

For y'all on low carb diets... what do you eat for meals while backpacking? I was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic, so I've been giving this some attention. I generally agree with zeke that an increased intake of carbs is probably not a big deal while backpacking, but just for the sake of consistency, I've been shifting more and more to Paleo Meals to Go for back country meals. Not hugely flavorful, but really pretty good. Next Mile Meals, offering keto meals, has some decent options as well. Haven't tried them, but Food for the Sole offers some slaws that look pretty good.

New lab work has my A1c at 6.4, so up a little since Jan, but still in the good range. All cholesterol numbers are normal. Doc says the insurance company keeps sending him notes to ask me to start statins, but even he has to admit my numbers don't suggest statins would do me any good. As he put it "Your numbers are better than any goal we set for patients on a statin".

Hey zeke , I think we are both on the 6.3 train out of Yuma! Did you get down to a 6 and I missed it? I am so enjoying having my CGM, and am realizing how much faster I could have improved if I could have started maybe two or even three years ago. That said, I am always 6.3 somehow. I did have a little problem crop up about a year ago when I found a small scab on my calf! Scab? How would I have wound myself> It happened that I was just ending doctor visits for my Charcot foot, and I asked him if he had any idea what I had the small scab? He commented that the color was wrong for a bruise, took a biopsy, next day I was scheduled with a surgeon! Melanoma. Easily removed (with a piece of my leg!), I began what has turned into a year of recovery. I was told it was a really big piece of meat that got taken off (cancer removal takes lots of surrounding tissue) and growing new skin is a l-o-n-g process. But actually, I am really luck to have noticed the scab, it was on the back of my leg and nobody would have seen it ion any circumstance. And follow-up PET scans that would have found cancer in lymph node (with worse news to follow) found zero. I am free of that crap. As for statins? Yes, a change in recommended meds a few years ago put most everyone on a statin. I take the smallest dose there is. I don't remember what caused the push, but why do I care? I just swallow the pill and yes, I continue to eat grapefruit! I'm a risk taker. Guess I should not wait months before popping back in.

bp2go 6.1 is as far down as I've been in the last 2 years. I'm settling for anything below 6.5 these days. Sorry to hear about the melanoma. That C stuff is the worst kind of f***ery. No Statins for me, yet.

bp2go, I'm so sorry to learn about the cancer, but you're such a strong person that I hope it's fully taken care of and you don't have to experience it again. zeke, your dedication to health is also inspiring. I often read this thread just to be inspired by others' strength.

bp2go, I’m also sorry to hear about the cancer. I trust they really got it all, but that’s a sneaky SOB, so keep going for those check-ups.

Odd as it will sound, I really don't think of it as Cancerwith a bit C. Melanoma just sounds somehow less a problem. Clearly I do know it can be a Big C problem, but as a skin cancer? People get small moles taken off easily, and in my case, I didn't feel it or see it, so it seemed more like no big deal. But I will say that my mom, many years ago, discovered a blood strike on her big toe. Blood blisters are pretty common if you do hammering or tool work where you can strike a finger! A thin blood stripe goes away after several days. But mom checked with her podiatrist, yes it was melanoma, and at that time the oncologist wanted to amputate her leg! The rule then was 6 inches in all directions around the site. That included her foot, and the next lymph node in the chain, located in the groin. We kids spoke to explain that t aage 80, the was too aggressive, don't do it! They took of about half of her foot, she did fine, and lived cancer -free for her remaining 20 years! Of course when I heard my news, I sort of braced to hear how much was going to go? Happy news, things have improved. My incision was 6X9 but only about a 1/4 inch deep. The surgery took about an hour and I walked away. Further tests found zero. I was very lucky. But yes, now I get the fun of getting checked frequently. I was asked to come in every three months, but I have decided maybe every 6? So far it's been a year. I know, I'm bad.

bp2go A year? It's been a year and they asked for every 3 months? Get your butt in there. They'll check things out and send you home, or they'll save your behind if they find something. Please, just go in for the check up.

It’s serious shit, definitely cancer with a great big C.

Melanoma. It’s serious crap! My nomination for Bumber Sticker of the Year! Okay, I am reprimanded. I actually have the name of my next doctor to call, so it will be soon. Oddly, his name is Dr. No! If he has an assistant named Miss Taro, I will turn around and leave.
