I may get flogged for this, but they're just laces. I agree. I've never had a set of boots outlast the second pair of laces. Even my old Vasque Sundowners, which I wore until the soles were completely treadless...and then some.

When I buy a new boot, I buy replacement laces right off the bat. I like the 3-twisted-cut-to-length-seal-with-shrink-tubing- laces. I cut the laces longer then what came with the boot. With a longer lace, I have enough lace to tie a more secure bow. I also think of laces as survival items. With a longer more rope like lace, I can use it for a snare. I also trust a more beefy lace to a prusik.
I look at boot laces as being a multi-duty item in times of need.

Kind of a weird rorschach image. Made me think of a guy standing on the ice in the middle of Chicago during a snow storm...

When the OEM laces wear out, I like to replace them with bright pink hockey-skate laces.

I'm kinda on the "who cares, just laces" train, with one exception, super thin tongues, if you don't have a padded tongue you may want a fatter or flatter lace so it doesn't dig into the top of your foot in high spots, otherwise, gutted 550 cord is hard to beat.

Goodness graciousness, We are talking about string here, not rocket science. Well, there are two properties I like that not all laces have: 1. Extra grippy 2. Minimally absorptive Metal aglets instead of plastic ones is nice, too, but not a deal-breaker.

Just doing a follow up here. I went to REI this afternoon and they actually have a decent selection of laces. Didn't buy any as I didn't have the length of the ones I have. Ohhhh welllll, guess I'll just have to make another trip.

I may get flogged for this, but they're just laces. If you said that about footwear we'd have to call the men in white jackets to come for you.

Metal aglets instead of plastic ones is nice, too, but not a deal-breaker. As long as they are ultralight Titanium...that are drilled out.

As long as they are ultralight Titanium...that are drilled out. Dude. Wind resistance. Turbulence. If I recall correctly a Reynolds number > 3000 is the land of non-laminar flow, depending on boundary conditions. No go drilling them out if you're a speed hiker. Or an ultra obsessed OCD/ADD/ADHD/wacko/whatever. I use plain old whatever laces from wherever, I don't modify them, and it's one less thing for my brain to obsess over when it should be reveling in the ambient conditions. Full disclosure - I think cgaphiker still has a pic of zeke tying my laces for me at an HOTB. It was a little bizarre, but whatever. I tripped neither before nor after.

Yeah. It did look like something else might be taking place. Full disclosure, I was showing him how to tie a non slip loop so the shoes would not need retying at any time during the day. Still, appearances gave other ideas.
