Morning. I am looking for some info on the ouachita trail starting at the Talimena trailhead into at least Deadman gap. Wanting to backpack in and spend the night. Wondering trail conditions and water situation, pack in our own or use filtration. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

If you have not found him yet, you need to check resources that Tim Ernst offers. www.timernst.com/He is the expert on that area. I don't know anything about the current water situation. starwalker may have some current info, he live close to the trail you are considering.

Talimena to Deadman Gap is a pretty short hike, about 8 miles one way and not terribly strenuous. Were you thinking of an out and back, or hiking in a few miles, spending the night, and having someone pick you up at Deadman Gap? I don't recall there being a great deal of water between Talimena and Bohannon Creek, which is almost to Deadman Gap, but I could be wrong. For such a short stretch, I'd just pack in my own water. It is a very pretty section of trail, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

We weren't sure how far we wanted to go. Just put a possible stop at Deadman gap. We want to hike in an camp for the night. We will most likely pack our water in. Just wanted a quick overnight fun hike really.

I think Bohannon Creek is pretty reliable for water, even during dryer times, and there are a few decent places to pitch a tent around there. If you hike a few miles further you come to a very nice shelter, with a picnic table, fire ring, etc, if you're looking for that kind of camping experience.

It has been extremely dry, bring your own water. Try this link for excellent maps. Ouachita Trail maps

I haven't been on that part of the trail in 10 years or so. I last hiked it in April with Prosecutor who selected the Oklahoma section of the Ouachita Trail for his retirement hike. We camped about 4 miles in that evening.
