Christmas comes but once a year and as we collect our backpacking bounty from friends and family consisting of five pound mattresses, electric portable fish fryers, headlamp/lantern/radios and the like, eventually something must be returned to pay for that 12 gram pillow you've always been wanting.
So....share your Christmas stories of gifts given and got, new and old.

Well, I do have some old snowshoes that I want to return. Several years of use but they are wearing out. I want my money back. What are my chances?
Hey tigger, I hope you get some pants and a new shirt. Merry Christmas.

Backpacking gifts are sort of like the tools I used to get when I became an electrician. No one really had any idea what I needed or wanted, so everything went back. I finally got around to making an exact list, including model #s, and giving it out whenever anyone asked me what I wanted. Now, my BP'ing gear is better than what most stores carry, and no one is trying to figure out what to give me. I actually prefer it this way. I buy what I want, and they don't have to feel badly about me returning some 5# multi-tool.

No gift exchanges with any obscure relatives here.. I buy my own toys. Works for me.

I have a small family...the bride and our daughter...and we are at an age and state of contentment that we stopped gifting several years ago. It is difficult buying for people who don't want or need anything. So we decided to put our resources throughout the year to the thing we all love doing and that's traveling. My wife and I will be making our 4th trip in as many years to Hawaii in 2017. What she doesn't know, and will find out tomorrow, is that I am flying our daughter over to stay with her while I hike the Kalalau Trail with my buddy who is also flying out to do that with me. It's a great gift to have and be able to be with the people you love!

tigger, if any of us (male or female) went into a store dressed, or rather undressed, as you are, we wouldn't have a chance to bat eyelashes before one of the store employees called the police and reported us for indecent exposure. Or worse yet, if you go into a store in the northern climates, you might end up on a psych hold and in a drab hospital gown with your arms bound across your chest and pumped full of psycotropic drugs. Your humor is too enjoyable for anything as drastic as incarceration in any institution to occur. So I'm collecting some cyber sweats to send to you so you can avoid freezing anything off.

Lol. My wife has attempted to buy small items a few times. She thinks I'm way too picky about gear and has given up. Of course, if her comfort and safety for several days relied on having exactly the right gear and having it be 100% reliable, I think she'd understand.

They were snowshoes, and the manufacturer had a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. When a metal tube breaks in the middle of a section, it is a manufacturing defect.

Forgot the gift card option. Already got about everything, and any new stuff tends to have a good manufacturers warranty. Everything should last a long thru-hike distance (except footwear) IMHO.

We've stopped giving gifts except between spouse and children. That made a huge difference in the Xmas stress when we did that years ago, and also helped free up the budget for the spouse and me getting each other ridiculously expensive backpacking toys.

I don't return gifts unless it is clothing and a matter exchanging because of size. It's my personal policy, something I was taught growing up by my parents.

Our whole consumerist system accommodates and encourages returns, esp this time of year.
