It's been a crazy year up there in 2016. tigger's avatar (taken in early May in Greenland) is a similar (although perhaps less newsworthy) part of the same story.

It also snowed in the Sahara. I'm sure the deniers will bring this up as an example of why global warming is a hoax.

Will the fabled Northwest Passage become a reality?
Will Santa and his elves seeking environmental refugee status become a reality?

Will the fabled Northwest Passage become a reality? It just might. I wonder what that will mean?

Imagine a time when the busiest ports and shipping lanes will lie between Russia and Alaska/Canada! Asia has never been closer! Russia is quickly expanding & modernizing Murmansk's port as they are fully expecting it to be one of their busiest ports as the Siberian/Arctic route becomes more & more commercially viable. 1/3 the length to Asia as going through the Suez canal.

Will the fabled Northwest Passage become a reality? It already is. In 2007 a private sailboat "Cloud Nine" sailed through the Canadian Archipelago, completing the Northwest Passage after two previous attempts. www.cruisingworld.com/final-passage-cloud-nineThe ice has opened up a fair bit since then. This past summer 2016 the luxury cruise-liner "Crystal Serenity" (not an ice-breaker ship) sailed the entire NW Passage with 1,070 passengers and 655 crew. www.crystalcruises.com/northwest-passage-cruiseOne certainly can't do it year-round still without a heavy icebreaker, but to a limited extent it's already open for business. There aren't many deepwater ports in the area, but you can probably expect that to change (see tallgrass 's post on Murmansk). The times are a'changing. - Mike
