We do our own dehydrating, have some favorite boughten meals from Packit Gourmet we use on special occasions, but haven't tried Hawk Vittles. Reviews? Or any other great companies to order some very tasty meals from? No MH, BPP etc.... too much salt.

I purchased once from Hawk. Very tasty. In the end, too $$$ for me. I am a simple man, with simple needs in the field. PB & J, tuna, maybe some salmon on occasion. Toss in some noodles or rice, & I am all set. Hawk tasted more gourmet. Something I buy from a restaurant, not eat in the field.

I'm a fan. Like all companies, some meals are better than others. I remember that I loved the hot Italian sausage with pasta, and didn't care for the breakfast casserole. Those are the only two I remember. I'm a simple man, too, but I guess I'm a little more high maintenance than zeke . I enjoy a good meal in the back country, and I like the simplicity of just adding boiling water. The other company I like that you didn't mention is Mary Jane's Farm. If you're concerned about salt, she makes some of the only low-sodium options I know of, and I really like her meals a lot.

My wife and I often backpack for our birthdays and have spent the last 25 New Years on the trail. Once in awhile we use one as a carrot to get through a planned long day. Special meals are for those occasions. It's like eating in a restaurant for us. That pasta sounded good, one of my favorites from Packit Gourmet is the Pasta Putanesca. I'll give Hawk a try. I'll look at MJF, too. Thanks.

I second the vote for Mary Jane's--our favorite company. Hawks Vittles are good, but we find the portion sized enormous---we've never cooked a full two-person package, and so we have odds and ends left over. Not a great plan. And who needs to carry extra weight?

And who needs to carry extra weight? Now, I'm really sold. Probably because we have winter and close to winter for 6 months of the year and I do physical labor for a living, I consume a lot of calories. I usually get at least half my wife's portion (she eats first then offers it to me) and then some. Maybe the poor woman would actually get something to eat!
