Hi all, My girlfriend and I will be visiting the US in the summer to spend time with emigrated family (we're from the Netherlands) and, probably, to spend a week or so hiking. We are a bit picky so I hope we will find what we're looking for I created a thread over here, any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ozymandiac

Welcome to the forums, Ozymandiac.
I'm sure someone from the New York region will chime in with some ideas. I hope you and your girlfriend enjoy your stay this summer.

Welcome Ozy!
The no Bear Country thing is a major hurdle and so is the public transportation requirement. You folks do realize you're in far greater danger from several other things on the trail than you are from bears, right?
You have a lot of amazing places out there to choose from; the ADKS, the Whites, the forests of Quebec and Ontario.
Unless there is a real health concern the other thing you have to forget about are the "weak dutch legs" and suck it up. A lot of us around ehre are older and some of us are overweight, but we pace ourselves and enjoy the greatness.
I think Walks With Blackflies will come up with some great suggestions for the ADKs. I'll start with just one:
Hut to Hut on the AT: Google the Appalachian Mountain Club's Hut System in the Whites. I reallly like Greenleaf, Galehead, Zealand, etc.
That is a magical part of the world. Whatever you do, wherever you go, have an awesome time.

Welcome from the Big Sky Country (northern Rocky Mountains). Don't worry abut bears. There are far more dangerous things such as your flight over.

And welcome from the far left coast! I agree with those telling you not to sweat the bears. And also that you'll have to manage some hills, so hit the Stairmaster this winter! (Zeke lives in Florida, which is as flat as the Netherlands, and trains on the highway overpasses...where there's a will!)

Thanks for the kind welcome and insight! It's great to see people from so many different places in one forum. Like you said: with training and a good pace, the hills might be fine. We had to abort a trip 2 years back because of my knees. But, that was our first time and I can't be sure we did everything right (pace and training). I didn't realise bears were so present in this region, but I think I'll be able to sell this to my partner I checked out the hut-to-hut system in the White Mountains. The White Mountains might be too far away, but: we also have family living in Vermont... So with a change in itinerary it might be possible, I will have to look into this. I will check out this hut system anyway for other places as well. (do you still take a tent with you when you use huts?)

I met a poster from a distant land, Who said “Two aching and damaged knees of mine Stand in my way. . . . Near Vermont, in the hills, A half formed hiking plan lies, whose need for facilities, And absence of ursine nuisance, and want of logistics, Tell that its creator well those comforts sought Which yet do not exist in the Vermont wilderness. The hand that typed them, and the eyes that read them On the forum, saw these words appear: My name is Ozymandiac, King of Kings; Look on my plans, ye backpackers, and lend some counsel! Nothing beside remains unwrit. Round the discomfort Of those beleaguered knees, protesting the hills, The lone and level trails stretch far away.
