The Grand Canyon Association is holding a fund raiser to help with restoring and maintaining the Hermit Trail, among others. Many of you have walked past that rock slide, or had difficulty finding the trail in places. Now is your chance to help out. GCA Donate page I am going to have to rely on bp2go or rebeccad to move this if they feel it is in the wrong place, or inappropriate. The Canyon holds a special place in my heart, and I may be blind to any rules I may or may not be breaking with this thread.

No personal indulgence here, just good people making vacations more enjoyable and the Park for "the benefit of all."

When was the rock slide? I don't recall an obstacle on the Hermit Trail hiking up from Hermit Creek to the rim in April 2015.

It's above the staircase, I can't quite remember where. It sucked getting around it in pouring rain that made it looser this past April. I took about a 4' slide when one piece broke away and I was just a little bit adrenalized! I made my wife go way above the route I took. A couple of years ago, that section had a boulder you had to sidle around. The slide, I believe, has become far more pronounced. I warned people going down to be careful and go to the highside, rather than the loose scree if you continued straight across or went a little below the remaining section of trail. Thanks for the link, Zeke. We'll send in a donation. I just realized I'm beginning to dislike rain. My wife fell on Mt. Mansfield in Vt. this Sept. on a rain slick trail and her knees are healing slowly, so we bagged the GC permits for April (grrrrrrr) and went with Point Reyes instead. Back in '18 hopefully.

The slide was in place, blocking the route, when I first hiked down the trail in 2001. It is mentioned in the 1996 edition of Thybony's Hiking the Grand Canyon. Right at the top of the Redwall section. If that big slide is not there any longer, I can see how the loose scree would be very tough to negotiate.
