In my opinion, if you need a fire or vegetation to stay warm, you're certainly doing it wrong. To each his own, but I would reconsider some of the heavier items and swap them for more reliable shelter and insulation. I think there's a big difference between having an objective of "going UL" as opposed to a "survival venture". OP claims both, so it's hard to judge. For the first, I'd focus on a high fill-count down sleeping bag and silnylon, but for the latter, I guess I might put the weight toward a machete... But I agree that if we're talking "backpacking", planning to rely on fires/vegetation is a bad plan. Note that the OP says this: I want to experience as much as possible the potential discomforts with not having enough gear. Sort of reminds me of those survivor-type TV shows where the scenario as something like a plane crash in the middle of a jungle; he only has the clothes on his back, no means of communication, hasn't eaten in 10 hours, no water... but just happens to have a huge knife (and a camera crew).

Yes , a lot more difficult to do without that 5 pound axe and harder still to repeat if moving from one spot to another. Still an interesting exercise but not really to do with regular backpacking.

I've never targeted a campsite backpacking that had 1/4 cord of split firewood there. The video also shows you walking on road, not trail, so I'll guess, at worst you could easily bail back to the car with a brisk walk. It reminds me of some of the solo trips I did as a teenager. Canvas tarp, hatchet, wool blanket, some rope, and a whole lot of shaking goin' on.Now, I can do 4-5 days with 0-20F temps very comfortably under 25 lbs. That includes everything and a book to read at night.
