Ok, .."may depend". New map study published in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Society): fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-americans-die-may-depend-on-where-they-live/This takes advantage of more precise coding ways of looking at the data etc...Alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes, drug abuse, infectious diseases, and transportation deaths discussed in the article along with 2 maps on cancer and transportation deaths.

Interesting commentary. I've seen some articles not on death rates specifically but on other measures of health in areas of high air pollution and proximity to noxious areas.
The cancer map was insightful, and unsettling in terms of the clusters, but it would also be interesting to see a map of cancer levels in 1980 to compare to the changes from 1980 to 2014. (I'm sure this exists but haven't looked for it; the subject is not one on which I wish to dwell.)
And there has been change in treatment approach in some specific cancers, as well as (I've been told by a medical professional) a change from viewing cancer as terminal to treating it as a chronic disease. I wouldn't by any means equate cancer by a chronic disease such as diabetes, or alcoholism, but I think the different perspective is insightful. Or perhaps it's a recognition that some cancers can't be cured, just controlled as much as possible.
